I have a 68 GT500KR(3679)and a 69 GT500(0944) The previous owners swear that the engine blocks have never been changed, yet Iam unable to find a VIN.stamped on the rear side of the block. The date code on the block corresponds to the build date of the cars(date code approx. 2 months prior to build date).
Was every block stamped or is it possible some were passed over? Thanks for any help.

Hey there, this site below can help you. Takes a day or so to get approved as a new member, just tell them the cars you own and you will be fine. You may even find your answer surfing around the site.

When I was doing research on my 67 block they helped me a ton:

I would expect the 69 to be stamped. As far as the 68 most of the ones that weren't stamped or irregular were prior to March 68. The KRs were a little more (but not always) consistant. There are 3 different areas I've seen 68 428s stamped.
    1. There is a pad near the # 8 cylinder. It is almost impossible to see with master cylinder in car. In addition to VIN stamps I've also see dates stamped here in the form of Year/Month/Day. I believe this was an engine assembly date.
    2. Rear of each cylinder head.
    3. Rear of intake manifold. I've only seen this on 500s with the aluminum PI intake.
    Hope this helps,
    Tim

Check out this answer, talk about finding the source:

Chip has replied (with title "I owned 3679"):

    Mike,

I was the second owner of Keith's car. The original engine - long block was not ever swapped out. The first owner had 3 - 2's installed and changed the cam, it had 3.5 rear gears. It would run 13.48s in 95F heat at MIR. The third and fifth owner I know did nothing to the car. I looked at the car prior to it being sold from the fifth owner and it appeared to be in about the same shape as it was when it left me. The only thing it realy needed was a steering box rebuild as the large tires the first owner had on the car had worn it out.

I am the guy who had the throttle hang open crossing the Woodrow Wilson bridge from Maryland to VA the day I bought it.

    Another response:

The VIN would not be stamped on the block on a '68 Shelby GT500

    Response to Engine Stamping
It would be stamped on the rear face of the driver side cylinder head. Other places would be the top of the C6 trans at the very rear or if it is a 4 speed then the VIN on the tranny is on the top front of the main case right above the outboard top bolt that secures it to the bellhousing.

You could have the original block, check the heads.

I thought Krs were the worst for stamping the numbers on .

    Howdy Keith !
Welcome to a fun and informative place! Next time you are in the capital, stop in and I can show you how to find the numbers you are asking about.Typically you will find them on the back of the left cylinder head. The numbers are 8 characters long, and with a clean surface-strong light-and a good mirror,we should be able to see them.I sent you a private message last week, hopefully you got it.Have you considered removing the drivetrain of either car?that would make it easy and you could do it in a weekend if you have the time/space.Let me know what your plans are,and if you need help.
    regards A.D.

    Hi again Keith!
To answer your questions:Yes we are selling GT 500's.and we have 2 on display, both are convertibles. The list is 14 cars long and to date we have sent 7 to their owners, with 7 more expected to arrive within the next few weeks. Please feel free to stop in and check them out, they are a very nice car to drive, and everyone is anxious for spring.Shelby has an ad to win his personal vista blue car in a raffle--check out Mustang Monthly. And do consider engine/trans removal,it is easier than you think, and is the best way to detail things.Keep in touch ! And dont hesitate to call.
