Daviddalton said "I think they are in the process of building the cars replacement. why else would they be stripping certain things from this car?? still a shady proposition!"

If they were rebodying/creating a new car wouldn't they want to destroy the old car so as to not destroy the credibility of the new car? With the this car on ebay and discussion on this forum i think any green 68 GT 500 conv with a tan interior is going to have its credibility destroyed. Its seems a dumb/greedy/shady thing to do...but then again people never surprise me :thumbdown.

Just a Curious Question.......... Suppose……, just suppose……., that THIS particular car IS a real Shelby……….. and the Shelby Tag and the Stamped VIN#’s on the Inner Fenders match up in the Registry…………. and someone took the VIN# Plate that was Riveted to the Dash and Title to build a Re-Bodied Shelby and stupidly left the Shelby Tag and Inner Fender VIN#’s behind………….. and someone ELSE bought this Car, filed for a Lost Title and Receive a New Title…………. then Re-Bodied this Car using all of the usable Parts on another Body. WHO would WIN in Court as to having the Right to SAY they had the REAL Re-Bodied Shelby? I know I am not the only one thinking this.

This is a perfect example as to why to identical cars (physically) can have 2 totally different values. A well documented car with a clean history is always more valuable. I am amazed how many cars I see out there that have repro VIN tags. I'll take the old wrinkled faded one anyday.

    It Sold!!!! ....maybe

for $15,250 to bidder number 5. Wish we could hear the rest of the story but we probably won't.

Makes one wonder how many classic cars are done in by neglect and the elements vs accidents.

Considering he has a feedback of 2 I'm guessing purchases 1/2 were for Playstation games of Gone in Sixty seconds and right now he's asking Dad for a $15K advance on his allowance.

Im no 68 expert however, wasnt the back cut up to fit the tail lights? I dont see this in the car.
This car looks to be a mustang vert with shelby add ons.

    Best Regards,
    Vern

The tail panel treatment is correct for a mid Dec on 68. Although many things are far from original (rear axle, suspension, undercoating in wells etc.) after some detective work by several this appears to be in fact an original car.

This has happened allot with the Cobras over the years. With the VIN being placed on numerous body panels after a wreck often two or more cars sprang up (normally years later) with the same VIN all with the claim of having the real car.

    Only winners were the attorneys

Now we just have to wait (guess we could start a pool ;)

for the first post from the new owner here or on another forum.

    Can see it now.

    "How can I tell a 68 Shelby....."

"Just bought a car and the hidden VIN's don't match...."

"Just found a car that must be very rare....."

    "Seller told me......"

"How would a 68 Shelby be worth if............"

We've seen them all before. Where and when with the first post show up.....

My take is that I doubt you will see that kind of a post...
..In today's market the car will disappear from the radar for a while, and will be 'processed' by one of a number of "Shelby Resto Factories"...and will re-appear on the market next year as a "complete rotisserie restoration" claimed to be "...one of the finest examples....", etc.

    ;)

Re: no number 68 conv on ebay

The cars sold and he emailed me telling me ALL THE NUMBERS are off the car. If you look at the pics you will see that in some there is a front bumper mounted then it is gone then the pass fender is off and an uncut apron so the numbers must have been cut after the pics.. Probably took the pics before he removed all numbers off the car. pretty deft move. Maybe he got bidders to think "hey maybe he"ll leave the numbers on" thinking that by the pics. Claims the covered wheels are not Shelby wheels also. Gary

We'll be one step ahead of him, we already know more about his car than he does (including the VIN;)

How many green/tan interior 68 GT 500's convertibles were made? Should be easy enough to spot.
How much to get in on the pool??? $20?
I will take the over on one year :guns: .
    Anybody else?

P.S. I was thinking the seller might be a member or frequent visitor to this forum...it might make sense with posts like "68 GT350 VIN locations?" and "My friend has a 68 Shelby how do i tell if it is legit?"

He probably saw the original "Gone in 60 Seconds" Movie (1974) and plans to steal its Twin and swap the Vin's like they did with the Red Challenger. I bet it ends up over Seas.

Re: no number 68 conv on ebay

When I bought my 1968 Shelby I was concerned about my car being legit. I did not know much about 1968s but I do consider myself well versed on 1969-70s having owned one since 1984( bought my GT500 in 1984, my present Gt350 vert in 1985). I contacted Tim and sent him pics of various areas. Well he knows his stuff and put me at ease on the car as mine had the nuances of a 1968 Shelby. I had no idea on some of the little features "hackers" could/would miss on building a fake. Thanks again Tim. Gary

I'm 99% sure these same photos were used when this car was sold a few years back, again on e-bay. I wish I could remember more, but I KNOW I have seen these pictures years before.

I'm sure this vin number has already been rebodied. I'm in for $20 on the bet - it'll show up "...just completed restoration..."
