Hello Everyone, Have you seen the vintage photos on page 34 of the new Shelby 2007 Annual? Those pictures are never before published "out-takes" from the photo shoot for the March 1967 issue of Sports Car Graphic. Our car is the first production GT 500 fastback. We have known for sometime that it is the GT 500 that was featured in that road test article and also in a couple of others. I scanned the photo of the GT 500 engine compartment and zoomed in on the passenger side inner fender panel. We now have conclusive proof that this is our car. You can clearly make out the serial number stamped into the inner fender panel: 67411F 0100. This type of proof is very hard to find and we are fortunate to finally have it. Best regards, Eric
What a find! Can't imagine the odds a picture of that area being so clear. That area looks dirty and beat up for a new car. I guess they were rough on it.
Very cool, Eric. I know how good it can feel when you find that one bit of information. That photo must have had great resolution for you to have scanned that bit and still make it readable! Can you post the entire photo?
Congratulations Eric, I looked at my original factory issued 67 ad pamphlet in color, The Road Cars, the one with the lime green car on the front page, and there is a red car inside. Color can be seen in the door opening and the car has a beautiful girl sitting in the drivers seat and it has standard front seats but deluxe door covers. The picture shows the lack of the metal pieces in the seat covers and the lack of the fiber glass seat backs with the trim around the upper edges. Wonder if they changed the front seats for the photo shoot or just removed the metal trim and back covers. /Texas Swede
Eric - Thanks for posting..was this from the Popular Hot Rodding issue? Unfortunately someone hasn't found the original negatives.... then we would really have some options Intereting enough is that in many other countries negatives from the 60's magazine shoots are still available for reprinting. Got a handful of reprints back in the 90's of some of the Trans Am coupes Found a box of negatives and shots from the same magazine a few years back at a swap meet ... unfortunately they were all late 70's stuff Pretty typical of preproduction shots for brochures and the like (remember all the odd stuff that ended up in the Mustang sales brochures?) Friend found a whole warehouse from the company that did the brochures and sales stuff for Ford in the 60's. He (a book writer) wanted to do something will all the original pictures. Only problem is that many of the pictures showed stuff that never ended up being done on the production cars publishing a bunch of pictures would have been a bit odd.
Where were those pictures from? I would love to see all of them....and do you have shock tower bolts facing the right direction?
Hello Everyone, This will be a long reply... Considering the car was new at the time, that area of the car does look a little beat up doesn't it....... Roy, the original picture belongs to the Petersen Publishing archives. I do not feel comfortable posting the entire picture. I do not want to cause any problems because I am trying to obtain additional "out-takes" from that original Sports Car Graphic photo shoot. Texas Swede, unfortunately our car is not the one that was used in the '67 sales brochure. We had thought for a long time that it possibly was. The car in the sales brochure is a pre-production prototype that never received a Shelby serial number. Jeff and Coralsnake, the pictures are from Sports Car Graphic, but were not published in the March 1967 issue. With any luck, I may be able to obtain additional photos. It is going to take some time. Best regards, Eric
Being "beat up" isn't unexpected for a car that got taken around/used allot. Often you can make out touch ups and repaints in some of the pictures that turn up In any case good luck with you efforts... hope it bares fruit. Its amazing (considering the American to discard older stuff) that pictures like this and the others Petersen has recently released, are still around
I have prints from the original negatives of all the outtake photos from the original 67 sales brouchure photo shoot! Kenny
You are doing a great job, thanks. Don't give up looking. If you (or anyone) runs across some pictures of 1968 Shelbys, especially the first four GOLD cars, let me know. I suspect there are some, since the cars were built weeks before production started.
Pete, Thanks for the compliment. Believe me, I am going to keep trying to obtain additional information and photos. Our car was in the February 1967 issue of Car and Driver. I have sent several e-mails to them inquiring about archived photos. They have never responded to me. Our car was in the February 1967 issue of Road and Track. I have sent several e-mails to them inquiring about archived photos. Their response was "it is against our policies to share archived photos with the public; and we have no staff to support this type of request". Our car was in the March 1967 issue of Sports Car Graphic. I am going to continue trying to work with a very reputable contact that has connections with Petersen Publishing. Hopefully, I will be able to obtain additional photos of the car from them. Our car was mentioned, but not featured, in the April and May 1967 issues of Motor Trend. I have not tried to contact them yet...... I will let everyone know if I am able to obtain any more useful information and photos. Best regards, Eric
I've got the Sports Car Graphic magazine. The "other" car in the article was a white GT 350, an early model just like mine. I'm sure my car isn't the one in the write up, but, just so you all know this, there were 20 "early model" white GT 350's. One of those has hubcaps. So, there are 18 other possibilities as to what that car's number is. I have blown up the GT 350's photos, but, the numbers are beyond the photo outline. And, there was about a 4-5 month lead time need to report on a car back then. Between photos, layout, editing. Since they used early 67 Shelbys built in October-November, this seems right to be a March 1967 issue.
Hi all on this subject. It is great to find stuff like this and we all enjoy seeing any history in picture form.Great job Eric! The White car in the same Sports Car Graphic article is most likely car # 0050 I have yet to prove it but more clues say it is.I am now extremely interested in the comments about the red car used in the brochure...a prototype but not assigned a serial number????? please fill us in.I would think it is a car with an interesting story to tell.
