does anyone know what front coil springs and what rear leafs originaly came on the 66 shelbys.. were they just stock mustang coil springs and leafs springs? Or were they special springs that were used on other cars and put on for the shelby for performance purposes?? Thanks Jimmy
Springs were Ford HiPo (K-code). Fronts are 8 1/4 coils with a free standing height of 13 7/8". Coil diameter is 0.60" . Rears are marked (bottom leaf) C4ZA 5556 S and the date code: for example: 16 6E or 16 E6 which means day 16, 1966. E probably stands for Eaton, the manufacturer, but I am not 100% sure. Hope this helps to identify yours. Texas Swede
They were also the same springs that came with the GT handling package so would have been on an A-code GT car as well.
Yes Dave, you are correct as regards the front springs but what about the rear springs. Were A-code GT springs marked with an S? Texas Swede
Hi Bo, I think you are correct that the rears are specific to cars with the 9-inch rear, at least that's what the Ford MPC seems to show. Plus, 9-inch fastbacks and converts used a different spring than coupes. Dave
Agree with Texas Swede Front and rears are the same as the Fastback K code application Rear springs are marked C4EA 5556-S with a related date code
Quote B.G. "Hipo rear leaf springs are also unique in another way. They have a taller locating pin that is necessary to be used with the 9 inch rear end. Because of the radius of the locating hole in the 65/66 9 inch housing the normal length locating pin will not go up far enough into the housing which it needs to do to locate the housing properly . The result of the rearend housing not being located properly will be that the rear of the car will track to the right or left when driving. Those who just change the bottom plate to a new set of springs might have a problem and not know it if the correct pins are not used
The picture shows the long and short pin. The longer one is the one that came on the hipo springs used with the 9 inch 65/66 rear ends. Bob
Does anyone have any comments on the gt fastback springs that Eaton is making now? I called and spoke with them and was told that the rear leafs are identical to the ones they made for them in 66..same cups clips insualtors bushings...He said you can tell the differance in his opinion except that they are painted black...He also said he can take our bottom leaf with a part number on it and put it on the new one..what do you all think.... JImmy
While I consider the question of the taller head leaf spring pin as one of those facts that fall into the "expert only" catagory, having ready access to each version is just plain amazing Bob. Is there anything you don't have pics of? Ok, how about pics of a complete HP arvinode exhaust system
Swapping the short leaf is a typical way to make reproductions look like the real thing. Can't recall (owners don't often leave a note on the car during judging telling us where they got parts what current Eaton springs look like but someone is selling ones where the ends of the leafs are not the same shape or tapered like the originals. - Couple of things to check
Thanks for the complement. Sorry I can't be a real hero but since the Avinode exhaust came on 64 1/2 hipos and not the later built 65 Shelby's (a few 65's Shelby's were reported to have come with the later style HP Mustang exhaust like on the 66) I don't have pictures of that early mustang style exhaust saved. Arvin is a OEM Manufacturer to Ford and made the 66,67,68, and 69/70 Shelby exhaust also. Bob
Any particular part of the system you need a picture of. Dave Wallace (in Ca) has been working (with the original company) on a reproduction of the whole system. If you check on the Hipo registry forum there has been pictures, video clips and diagrams of the system posted. http://www.hipomustang.com/hpmx/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7567
Thanks, I have been reading about their efforts to duplicate this VERY rare original feature. I will be getting one too. My first response was trying to pay Bob a compliment in a humorous way (obviously I am not a comedian) and I thought I would use a rarely covered subject. While that exhaust was not correct for 1965 GT350’s, they where being used on the San Jose production lines when the first batch of early ‘65s were being made. Also, I am glad to see that more and questions about “what was originally on the car or what is unique to our cars” come up because this type of information gets documented on forums, magazines and internet pictures and hopefully, it will convince owners to spend the extra time to keep their cars with the “as produced” variations so that ALL the history is preserved.
Just checked my Nov 64 built A code fastback. It came with the competion handling package and a 8" rear end. The springs are marked C4ZA 5556 S 175E4 So start checking those A code fastbacks too! Larry
