I have seen several pix of GT350s with the side exit exhaust...was this an option for the Shelby in 66? I'm currently doing a 66 clone and was considering the side exit.
then you're all set.... but as to your original question, I don't know of any '66's that came that way. And I'm not certain all '65's did. I have read in a SAAC publication that certain DMV's (California ?) objected to registering vehicles with exhausts exiting in front of the rear wheels. So that, along with owner complaints, is why they were changed to rear exiting exhausts. Z.
I have a 66 clone and was considering the same thing. I like it loud. What I found was that I could not use the traction master bars used on the 66 Shelbys with a side exhaust. My car is also lowered slightly which would only make the problem of speed bumps and potholes worse. Hope this sheds some light.
There were indeed a few rear exiting 65's - mostly at the very end of production. Can't say I have ever seen a original 66 with side exhaust, but that's not to say there were none. Mike
Factory or not,..nothing says " road racer" more than '65 side exhaust. I built a '67 terlingua mustang coupe clone for my brother in Az. 2x4 small block, 5 speed, 9" with 4:11 rear and It HAD to have the side exhaust! You can hear it come from blocks away!
Actually you can run side exhaust on a 66 with underrides. Went on a drive last weekend with a friend who has that setup. The exhaust exit is just in front of where the the bar bolts to the front bracket. Don't know if he had to shorten the pipes somewhere to get it to fit but it looked and sounded great.
