Hey there..got a question for you guys...working on driveline...what markings should be on our driveline as far as paint marks..colors..casting numbers? date code stamp? type of factory weight... details..march 66 built car...four speed, 389 rear end...lots of pics would help also...] thanks guys..
Driveline markings seem to vary quite a bit throughout production but here's a (lousy) pic of the original tube from 6S1757, also a late March 66 San Jose build, 4-speed car. I had it retubed because of some dents. The tube had been cleaned and original paint touched up a bit as close as possible to the original markings. No casting numbers or date codes. Dave
Before everyone runs off and copied Dave's driveline I thought it should be mentioned (discussed many times in other treads) that the stenciled writing on his driveline was only applied to approx 1/3rd of the drivelines from what workers at the time have shared with us. Current belief IMHO is that the coding contains the diameter of the tube and the forming date of the tube. Not sure if anyone has worked out the whole decoding of the code yet
Thanks....for the pics and email..interesting..with that being said...well the one we currently have has the yellow stamp of 19078-4E it has two white stipes that are on one end of the shaft and both ujoint ends that are welded to the tube itself is marked 7576JM (cast raised numbers and letters) What would be the correct color striping on the driveline for our set up. trying to figure out if this is our original factory driveline. It has one square weight on one end that has two tiny holes in it and one round weight on the other end. Thanks again...great discussion..
Jeff's points are well taken. I have seen the 19078-4E stencil on a driveshaft original to a Hertz car in the 6S1600 range so perhaps that number was used on automatic cars.
Yes, freshly restored so probably not a good data point. I do have a friend with an early Hertz auto car that is undergoing resto right now but the original driveline has not yet been touched. Will try to find some numbers.....
Just can't trust em The colors (stripes) are more important IMHO since all drivelines got those - while the majority didn't get the stencils. In addition there is a chance that the stripes changed a couple of times in the early years
