My Shelby was built on 1-29 68,--19 days late. With 68 production of all Mustangs starting sometime in Oct.- Nov. of 67, how could they produce over 143,000 by the end Jan. 68. ?? When the production begins does Ford count from #1, or do they count from 1001 or 100,001. Can someone explain this, to some of us slow kids.- Thanks,---S.
1968 Mustang production started at the beginning of August 1967. Ford does start the serial numbers at 100,001. The NJ plant made well over 115,000 cars in 1968. The three assembly plants made 300,000 plus in 1968. 100,000 divided by 12 months is approximately 8,333 cars a month or 277 cars a day/avg. Obviously, every day was not a work day. So the daily average was higher. Cars were serialized and sent to the line in an order that you would not recognize as being sequential. A car with a higher Ford serial number than your car could have been built before yours ever made it to the line. The wonder of computers! Your car was built well into the fifth month of Mustang production.

Both will give you a much better idea of 68 production.There was a long strike that really blanked out the entire month of October.Hope this helps you answer your questions P.D.
