I am doing a little research on the steel hoods used on the '66 GT350s and was hoping so folks with original steel hoods could answer some questions.
    1. What Shelby Vin is your car?
    2. I have read in a few places there were 2 different style hoods with 1 having a round hole under the scoop, and the other have a oblong hole that was roughly the size of the scoop. Which version do you have?
    3. What date code is on your hood? I think this is located on the frame by the driver's side hinge.
    4. Does you car have the full latching hardware.

Thanks in advance for all responses.

    Jay

6S296 has an all-steel hood with an oval cut-out. I've observed two styles, like you mention, and attribute them to stories Shelby received two shipments of them. Looking around my driver's side (LHS) hinge I can not find any date stamping. I'll have the hood soda blasted later this spring and will look again at that time. It does not have Hood latching hardware.

Thanks for the info guys, it a good start! As a clarification on the date code location, it should be on the rear part of the frame running parallel to the rear edge of the hood, and located ~2.5"-3" inboard of the back of the driver's side hinge. I hope that description makes sense.

    Thanks,
    Jay

    6s2344,
Thanks for the info. Any chance of getting the date code? Anyone else?

6S923 has a round hole and is date coded. Difficult to
    see though.

    Texas Swede,
Yea the date codes are tough to see especially through the paint. Do you happen to have a pic of the bottom of the round hole hood? I have never seen one and would appreciate a pic or 2. If you have any please send to sfm081 at yahoo dot com.
    Thanks,
    Jay

    Jay,
Sorry, I don't have any picture showing the actual hole in the
hood only the date code. My friend and owner of 6S923 sent
me that from Sweden a couple of years ago. Will ask if he has
any good picture showing the port hole later this week.
Car is being restored as we speak.

Were there any cars with steel hoods with fiberglass scoops originally?

The date code on the original all metal hood on 6S923 is 8 28 2,
    i.e. August 28 second shift.

None. There had to have been one made to make the female mold, but it wouldn't have ever been used otherwise.
