Hey guys hows it going? I'm new to the board and figured this would be a good place to ask my question. I'm starting the hunt for a Shelby GT to give my dad. I can remember going for rides in my dad's car when I was a kid. He actually had 2 that I can remember a GT500 and then he had a GLH as a daily driver. Anyway he had sold his GT to pay for me to go to a good school when I was younger, so I would kinda like to see if I can find one to replace the one he gave up. Now I'm not looking for the perfect show room car or anything like that. I would actually prefer a project car that I can supprise him with. I have friends willing to help me with the work, heck one even has a old shelby motor sitting in his shop. How much should I be looking to spend on this even if all I find is a rolling shell? I'm in the northwest USA (Oregon to be exact) and I have never once found once found anything except a complete show ready car forsale around here and I know that is way out of my range. Or am I going to be better off finding a regular mustang and just building a replica of what he had before?
A rolling shell with no motor nor trans is.... probably going to run around $40,000. I think that the trick may be actually finding one. Everybody kind of has your idea and I am not trying to insult you at all. Good luck.
yeah i'm well aware that there are pleanty of other people looking for them aswell. the more i think about it the more i'm thinking i may end up using a regular mustang chasis to start. his car was fairly far from a "stock" gt500. if i remember right he had gotten it from a racer friend of his and alot of parts had been swapped out over the years for updated parts. at least i will have a shelby engine in it if i can talk my friend into selling me the spare he has. funny thing is it seems about half of my friends have had shelbys at one time or another. one guy i know collects the shelby dodges (just picked up a csx to add to the collection).
Sorry to say, $40,000 isn't enough anymore. Last year a barn-find qaulity 67 GT 500 got bid up beyond $62,000. And more recently, a 67 GT 350, with no engine but otherwise complete was bid beyond $50,000. Most 67/68 fastbacks with decent sheet metal get bid up over $7,500 if you want to build a clone.
I know a guy who is selling a 65 GT350 Clone. It needs to be put together still but he has some really nice parts for it. Very tempting for me. I just don't have the time. Let me know if you are interested
There is a Shelby dealer in Oregon, http://www.shelby-cars.com/. I have spoken with him a few times. I am pretty sure he could help you find something original or a project car. At least a good local resource for you. Happy hunting.
thanks for the info and that site i'll check with them and see what they have going. on a side note i've had a csx fall into my lap so there is at least one shelby for my garage.
