Engine Detailiing 66 GT350

    I'm new to this site so I thought I'd jump in and get started. I have a 66 GT350 #2210. Second owner of the car. I've known the car since it was
    purchased new in 1967. It was my dream to own it one day and that day
    finally came. I would like to cosmetically detail the engine. Does anyone
    know of a source or list that SAAC uses to judge the cars? I want to do
    it right and am looking for some guidance. Thanks in advance

    Welcome to Shelby Forums cobrasvt66! Hold tight and I'm sure someone will help you out. Also, upload a picture or two if you have the chance. We would definitely like to see your '66. Especially some pictures before the detailing and after.

    I tend not to be too concerned with my car's cosmetic looks, but I can't say I don't think about it from time to time. Here's 2 links, both referencing the MCA judging standards - just realize that if that's the arena you want to prepare for, then that should be the source of your info - you can get in touch with MCA directly. To the best of my knowledge, that would be the basis of SAAC judging as well.

    Both sites are wise choices. do phot your car before as there may be some markings (Wax pencil or paint) that you may not notice until they are washing away so get in close. sometimes mild soap and warm water (Not hard water) cleans everything up nice enough and retains a classic look. many a complete restoration started with a Mild detailing so be careful about what you do versus what you Want to do!!:thumbup:

    To all who replied, I thank you. The reason I asked the question is that I am
    removing the original motor and plan to pickle it. The VIN on the block is what
    I am concerned about preserving. The car has been completely rotisserie restored in 1997 and still took a second place at SAAC 30 in the car show.
    I'm putting in a '70 302 block with '69 351W heads. It's now a 331 stroker.
    Other than the engine modification it is as Carroll built it. I'm interested in
    making the engine esthecially correct as possible. I look forward to chatting
    and sharing with all who feel the same. Thanks again and I'll get pick some
    pictures out and post them here. I had to wait 38 years to acquire this
    particular 350 and am damn proud and happy to own her. To all who have
    a dream, hang on to it, you never know, it just might come true. Mine did !!!

    Looks great! Is the Paxton original? Can you post some pics detailing the air filter canister?

    Thanks for the compliment. The Paxton is an original. The original owner (George) took delivery of the car with the setup in boxes in the car. He owned it for 37 years and never installed it. It had never been out of the
    boxes. He told me that he regretted never installing it. So last year I put
    it on the car after rebuilding the carb and compressor. Thought after that
    many years gaskets and such in the carb and bearings and seals in the compressor were not something you would want to trust. Also the inlet hose
    from the air cleaner to the compressor was not to installed for driving. I take
    the replacement hose off and put the original on when I get to cruise nights and shows. I'll take some pics of the air cleaner over the next day or so and post them for you.

    Hi,
    Some years ago, Jim Cowles wrote an excellent
    article, with many pictures, in Mustang Monthly
    about how to detail both a 65 and a 66 Shelby engine.
    Don't remember the year and month of the magazine but
    maybe an email or phone call to Mustang Monthly would
    solve that. Have the magazine myself somewhere in the
    magazine pile. Will see if I can find it during the weekend.

    I'm familiar with the article you're talking about. I've looked for it and don't seem to be able to find it. I contacted the Magazine and their old issues section, but unfortunately it's not available thru them. I guess I'll just have to keep looking. Thanks for the info, it all helps.

    PeckShelby - I tried to upload some pics of the aircleaner, but it wouldn't let
    me. Randall told me in the past that the site should resize them, but apparently that is not working. I sent them to him in an email and asked that
    he upload them for me. That's the best I can do. P.S. Please excuse the dust on the aircleaner, it's not on the priority list right now. Getting that hole filled where an engine goes is at the top of my list right now.

    Thank you very much. I bought one of of ebay this past week and I am very curious to see if it is a match - based on your pics they look really close. I have never seen an original in person so I want to make sure what I got is the real deal. I paid $66.00 for it so I am not to worried if it is not an exact match! Thanks again - Mike.
