Hello, i'm from London, England, I wonder if anyone could give me their opinions on a Shelby that may be for sale, my Dad is an MOT tester and he did this 1968 Shelby last year, see links, the guy wants £30k for it which I think is about $55k in American money at the moment, from what we saw when it was in our garage it just needs some tidying up, the paint isn't great, slightly faded in places, there is a tiny bit of surface rust on the driver's side door seal and there is a small gearbox oil leak, I spoke to the guy and he also said some plugs need fitting to the engine, i'm no expert so I would need to find out more details about that but he assured me it won't need a rebuild, apparently the car was used by Playboy in the 1970's for a photo shoot and he has a picture of Hugh Hefner standing next to it, he can't prove it's the actual one though, it has spent a big part of it's life in the South Of France so I would imagine it left America in the late 1970's? Anyone know it? It is an S Code with the Shelby Extension, I know it's difficult to give an opinion with the little amount i've told you and pictures but do you think what he's asking is fair?

    Justin,
I'm going to take the conservative approach. First above all these days almost any GT 500 is worth $55K. What do you want the car for? If you want a driver I would say its fine. If you are looking for something to restore to original I would say no. Hard to tell from what you've shown but I can tell you just to bring whats under the hood back to original could easilly run 10K or more. I'd like to see more pics of interior and underside.

in the usa you could get at least 65 thousand dollars for it as it is...is it manual trans? -- that helps...if it was in my hometown i would pay 55k in a heart beat -- just my opinion

I would say that car would sell in the states for at least 75-85k especially if it is a factory AC car.

Hahaha Javed, hello mate, firstly the reason i'm thinking twice about it is because I haven't got that kind of money in all honesty to just spend £30k so I need to be sure i'm making the good decision, I agree on the price, quite fair, it's an automatic, from what I remember when I had a look inside it was just a bit tatty, air con doesn't work if I remember, the good thing is that the guy is in no rush to sell and he says I can have first refusal so at least I have time to think, in the meantime i'll try and find out more

    Justin,

Not that it is exactly my cup of tea, as looking for a 4-speed 66 GT350, but I would entertain buying the car. I'm a Yank living in So France right now, but will be in the UK on the 11th and 12th for business (Thames Valley). Willing to let another Forum user take a look at her?? :)

    Cheers,

    Steve GT350

I will probably look in to buying it myself actually, any reason you prefer the 1966?

    Hi Justin,

Check with SAAC to ensure that the numbers match, and if they do, buy the car! Find, beg, borrow to get the monies together, and you will not regret it. Even if the car needs some work, paint, etc., five years from now you will be well ahead of the game, and own a rare car(especially in Europe).

On my part, I just love the 1965 and 1966's. Multiple family-members have had early Mustangs throughout the past 40 years. One of the first cars I can remember is riding in my cousins' 1965 convertible back in the late 60's. Also spearheaded a hop-up-restoration for a 65 coupe of my brothers' back in the early 80's. Easy cars to work on and upkeep. They still work on fuel, compression and spark. No black-boxes or other modern technology to deal with or go wrong. I have always loved the fastbacks, and now have the means to own one...and the pinnacle in my view was the 66.

So, if you come across a 65 or 66 GT350 in the UK, drop me a line and I will be on the next EasyJet flight from Nice!:)

    Cheers,

    Steve GT350

Yeah Coralsnake checked the Vin out for me and found out it definitely is genuine, how can the SAAC tell if it's matching numbers though?

    Hi Justin,

I would first have SAAC confirm the Shelby VIN#. The contact is Vincent Liska. 68registrar@saac.com

SAAC is usually very quick to respond to VIN requests. Always best to see if they have any history info to share.

Also there is a good site which lists info about 68 Shelby's both for value, and also for proper ID/tag locations, etc.

You may also want to see about getting a Marti report for the car, as to know what it originally came equipped with from the factory.

    Happy hunting!

How did Pete match the Ford assigned sequential # with the Shelby unit #? Did he contact SAAC for you? As far as matching #'s SAAC can't verify. You need to check block and transmission to see if they have partial vin#'s on them. On top of that not all 68's had them.

Petes in Columbus (hopefully finding me a rear console ashtray). I wouldn't but anything past Pete but I doubt he has access to SAAC info other than asking Vinnie to verify the #'s coincide.

    Hi,
The 68 numbers are all in the SAAC Registry. If you have the
Ford part, it's just to look it up and get the last 5 digits which is the
    Shelby part.

Actually I was thinking of previous years. For 68 the registry does contain the full Ford/Shelby VINs. You still want to get the full 16 digits to make sure the 5 digits correspond with the 6 sequential Ford #'s which I, Pete or anyone witha registry can check for you. You also want to make sure that the windshield, fender aprons, Shelby tag all match. You don't want to invest a lot of dough on a phony.
