Has anyone found a source for the flat gas cap emblem on the early '67s?

Just so other early 67 Shelby owners know, these "flat" emblems stopped after car #84. There is an aluminum adapter on top of the flip down section of the gas cap to mount the flat emblem.
Bob Gaines (owner of SAAC Premiere car #0001) told me about 6 months ago that he was looking into getting some of these flat emblems repoped. I looked into this about 12-15 years ago but the store owner of the trophy shop I went to could not promise that they would not be exact, so I did not proceed.

Here is what I did on my SAAC Div II Concours Gold car #0036. It passed Concours as it still is a Shelby gas cap emblem.
Take the current curved emblem and place it into a thick phone book, shop manual or catalog. 2" thick minimum. Place a heavy object on top. I used a cylinder head. Let that sit like that for 3-4 MONTHS to slowly take out about half of the curve. Then, place the emblem between two hockey pucks, with the weight on top for about another 2 months. The idea is to s-l-o-w-l-y remove the curvature. Then: Be cognizant of the adapter rotation, and the emblem rotation, and don't forget to place the screw into the adapter (might have to drill a hole in the bottom puck for this), and epoxy the emblem to the adapter. Clamp the two pucks between a board. After then epoxy dries, you might have to use your fingernail to remove any epoxy that has run onto the face of the emblem.

NOTE: you cannot put the curved emblem into a sheet metal roller. It has been tried. The emblems crack.

    Hello,

Is it documented somewhere that the flat gas caps stopped after car number 84? I own car number 100. It was an Engineering/PR car. In the magazine tests and factory photos it appears to have the flat gas cap. Please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Eric

    Rod,
Let us know what Gaines eventually does. I still have my original flat cap plus I found one at a individual vendor while attending a SAAC event here in TX.
I still have your letter fm 20+ yrs ago about how to flatten the curved emblem, but I've never done it. I'd sure love to restore both my caps.
    Thanks.

EJT: not any documention, just an observation some 18 years ago. And lets remember, your car number does not dictate the order in which it was built at S/A. I have practically every 67' Shelby included magazine article, I can't tell any curved or flat gas caps on any photos. Back then, no road tester would even bother looking.

Bob Gaines can decide to maybe post something here if he gets some repoped

A friend of mine sandwiched his emblem between two Hockey pucks then slowly added some books on top as weight. It worked and the gas cap looked perfect! Good luck,
    David
