As you know I am an autocrosser. I read our local autocross forum to keep up with local autocrosses ( http://www.autocross.us/forums ). Well there was a post from a guy that used to autocross a GT-500 that happened to mention one of our list members. Dave Cutchins used to run a GT-500 that he has since sold to his brother (they co-own it actually). He currently autocrosses a Formula Ford, here is what he wrote: My 1st auto-x was in a department store parking lot on Virginia Beach Blvd put on by TSCC just about the same time period. I had been to several events as a spectator, but this time there was a real fast Shelby GT-350 at this one. Since I was driving a GT-500 I had to stop to see how the 350 would do. The owner of the GT-350 (Lee Mathias) came over and introduced himself and ending up convincing me to enter the event. He told me to put some insane amount of air pressure in my tires ( what do you mean - it says 35lbs max right there on the sidewall). Well, I did not listen to him and made a complete fool out of myself. My wife said that everyone was laughing at my performance but commenting how fast the car was in a straight line. About 5 years after Dave's first event, he started showing up as a spectator at occasional events in his Shelby. I of course got to know him as he would watch my parents and myself run our '68. Then after a couple of years Dave was watching at all of the events, then he would get to the event early, and watch all day. I finally convinced him to give it a try again, but he had gotten a Triumph GT6 to run. The GT6 was slow, very slow. After more than a year of him running the GT6, he finally gave the GT-500 a try at one of the larger events. One run (after some experience) in the Shelby and he immediately sold the GT6 and his GT-500 became his primary autocross car. He ran it for several years, and probably became one of the most successful autocrossers that had ever tried a GT-500. He ran east coast Pro Solo's, and usually did not win, but the car always got more attention than just about anything else at the event. Calvin, you are lucky you don't live here in Atlanta. Both my kids have learners permits now and want to autocross. The SCCA only does preregistration on line and all the events for this season are full, max number of entries. I have tried to get help finding a site from the local Mustang Club members as MCA has access to insurance, no dice. Matt has several hours at Talledaga Short Track in my 88 Saleen and Paula has one SCCA autocross school in a go kart. Otherwise it looks like the will have to do a teen driving class. My first autocross was in 1965, Tybee Island Georgia go kart track. The local SCCA put it on several times a year and talked me into trying it as they had never seen a Mustang autocross. The track was enclosed by a big concrete wall and my 65 Mustang convertible would barely fit through the gate onto the track. I beat an XKE and an Austin Healey 3000 for first place and finally found something besides sailing that I did well right out of the box. I still have a photo of that Mustang in 1965 running in a Colonial Store Parking lot in Savannah. RUN TILL YOU SEE THE CHECKER OR THEY TAKE AWAY THE CONES.........SEE Y'ALL.
