It's all about the money, at some point you must take a stand , if you don't buy it , it will go away..............

What is a real Shelby and what is not is up to the individual owner. I have my opinion, and I am sure everyone else does too. It is not up to SAAC to change our minds. The new clones (Shelby licensed, or otherwise) are what they are. If they sell, fine. It has no impact on our car built in the 60's. Rebodies fall somewhere between an all original car and a clone. A clone is better in my opinion than an "air car" which has been passed off as having a real serial number that maybe was on a car that was known to have been destroyed. All of these are fine and are what they are, as long as the owner, or the buyer and seller are aware of it all.

When an owner thought his car was an original car, and he finds out through other sources that it was indeed one of the others, that is the bad situation that unfortunately has happend way too often. Often this owner, who bought what they thought was a good car, tries to pass it off to someone else rather than get stuck with the loss.

I was at a Shelby Club event years ago near DC where a '66 GT350 owner found out that the Shelby he had recently bought was indeed not a Shelby (This was way back when there was not nearly the info available). Before the event was over he was talking about how he could sell it and get another. I don't know what ever happened to that car, but I remember how everyone at the event felt about what had happened. It really put a damper on the rest of the event.

I have to disagree, either it is or it's not. Just as you pointed out someone got hurt. I'm adressing original cars 1965 thru 1970, I don't even want to start on the New continuations , buyers there should know exactly what they just bought.

they should know what they just bought except none have been sold yet!! (The Legendary GT continuation series cars) for those unaware, Carroll Shelby has taken yet another step in making the SAAC Registry even thicker and potentially delaying the printing for another year in case he decides to "Continue" something else!! Granted they are absolutely Beautiful and 90% accurate in appearance with subtle upgrades that add a nuance to the cars. but they are actually more Expensive than a similarly prepared "Authentic" 68 Shelby!! the Buyers in this case will be Buying a recently restored Mustang that has received the Blessing of Carroll Shelby to continue it's Journey in life as a Bona Fide Shelby Mustang!! maybe they could arrange an amnesty program for all the Cloned Burn Victims to have their cars officially anointed as Real?? at least their Serial number at one time was real before Marti Auto works whipped up a new one!! (Just Kidding):laf: but the reality of this all is that if you were to mention what is happening now 25 years ago at a SAAC event, my money says they would never have gone for it! but then again I guess I do not have enough money to change peoples minds or morals..

One thing that can never be disputed when discussing re-bodied cars; A re-body car was never inside the Shelby American plant. The modifications to the chassis, no matter how well done were not done by Shelby American employees. It can never be worth what an original car is worth. Is that to say that a good re-body is better than a original that is byond repair? That decision is between the buyer and seller. It's when the fact that it is a re-body is forgotten is when problems arise. I have seen that happen.

A few years ago, I was at the Portland Swap meet when I was approached by a guy asking for some help. It seems a friend of his from Canada had put a deposit on a ’66 Hertz car simply on the word of the seller. Having second thoughts, they wanted me to look at the car. To make a long story short, the car was a very nice 2+2, pony interior with a bunch of GT-350 parts hung on. It wasn’t even a HiPo tub. We cornered the seller, at first he insisted it was an original. When I pointed out the problems, he said the original car was totaled and since he put all the parts on this one, he didn’t see a problem. He refused to refund the guy’s deposit I heard later that they settled on a price and the guy drove it back to Canada.
