TheCarSource.com Shelby Mustang List ------------------------------------ What's everyones opinion on this one? There's no right or wrong answer here, I'm just interested in people's opinions here. Pull out your Shelby flavored crystal ball and tell everyone what you see. There are a lot of special Mustangs available out there and prices are all over the place, but assuming we are talking just street cars and not any kind of race car. What new 2007 Mustang will be the most sought after Mustang 10-20 years from now. Roush, Saleen, Ford SVT GT500, Steeda, Hertz, Shelby made GT350, others? Here's a chance for everyone to offer up your opinion and get a little chatter among the group here. No need to debate any one answer because there is no one right answer. Which new Mustang could you buy today that you'd want to have for the next 10-20 years? What do you think? TheCarSource.com Shelby Mustang List ------------------------------------ Guys, Call me crazy, but the GT500 and the Hertz GT350H look to me to have the better chance for future collectibility, simply because they are "official." That said, I don't think that they will reach the levels that we're currently seeing for the '60's cars. The Roush and Saleen cars are really tuner specials- GREAT cars in limited numbers that also support the idea that they will be collectible in the future, but maybe not on the level of the GT500/GT350H cars, unless they make SO many of the latter that there will be too many on the market for the demand. A good example of this might be the Dodge Viper- another great car that is too available to be all that collectible, at least for now. This call is difficult for any serial-production car. Remember all the guys that were paying up to $100k for ZR-1 Corvettes when they were new? They look silly today, but it could also be that their time has not yet come. The people that paid big numbers for the "last" 200 1976 Eldorado convertibles aren't looking too good either. You'll note that I'm not focused on the Eleanor cars and their derivatives, probably reflecting my own prejudices about them. I don't like them much, but I'm sure that there are those that do, especially the auction companies! Then there are the "cult" cars that are always decried as undervalued by their relatively small group of enthusiasts- the Delorean comes to mind, among others. History tells us that cars that will be collectible tend to bottom out after about ten years and then go up based on demand and the number of survivors in the market. I don't see that changing much here. Given Ford's announced plans to build "as many as they can sell" of the SVT GT500...well, how collectible are the '97 SVT (Mustang) Cobras? IF only 500 Hertz models are built, the odds look reasonable that it'll be collectible "some day". Of course, I've got a "2-top" (removable hardtop option) '95 SVT 'vert that's "1 of 499" and all I can say for it at this point is that it's depreciated more slowly than its siblings. > Which new Mustang could you buy today that you'd want to have for the next > 10-20 years? > OK, if I were gonna DRIVE it for the next 10 - 20...realistically, a Hertz; or, (heroically) assuming I'll still be doing HPDE events when I'm 70, a Roush (they seem to be put together better than Saleens...?). OTOH, one of our SAAC NW members is getting excited about the modified V-6 package Shelby's working up (maybe to be offered as a turnkey, after the Hertz order's finished?). Re: [Shelbymustang] Which Will Be The Best As A FutureCollectible Mustang? TheCarSource.com Shelby Mustang List ------------------------------------ All- Remember that old saying about "Past is prologue" and "Those who refuse to recall history are doomed to repeat it". Many of our beloved Shelbys (the real ones) were once scorned by the general public and many sat on used car lots waiting for a new home like a poor cat or dog at the animal shelter. My opinion, mind you, but I think it's going to take longer than it's worth for these newer cars to really appreciate. There's always the next best greatest thing to take it's place. Case in point: My '95 Cobra R #228 of 250. Nice car but, by today's standard, way underpowered and an archaic suspension. It's 11 years old and, while it's held its value fairly well, it certainly hasn't appreciated. Give it 20 more years and it may but figure what the same amount of $ would do over 30 years @ 5% and you get my drift. It's a good thing I love it and that the insurance, taxes, registration and inspection (safety only now for 10 yr. old vehicles) in NC are miniscule. If you've got time on your side and really like a vehicle, go for it. Otherwise, buy something that's already stood the test of time and enjoy it while you can. TheCarSource.com Shelby Mustang List ------------------------------------ I think the Parnelli Jones Saleen has the possibility of becoming a collectible. Low numbers, distinctive look, it's a Saleen and the association with Parnelli Jones can't hurt. Carl __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
