Buying a car from Canada Question

I have found a car in Vancouver BC Canada.

Anybody bought a car from Canada before. What type of title do they have and how does that work into a title in the states?

Any type of taxes from either side when purchasing?

Will transport companies pick up cars there for about the same price as in the states?

    Thanks for any insight.

  2. Tony:
I am a Canadian and have the experience of selling a car to a U.S. citizen. The subject of transport companies coming into Canada is a non starter in our part of the Country. What I did, and perhaps you can get the seller to do the same, is drive the vehicle across the border where it can be picked up by the transport company. The procedure was very simple. I went to the U.S. Government website (sorry I can't remember the correct name) that covers importation and export to and from the U.S. You need to download 2 documents and fill them out. In my case, I was the exporter and importer since I drove the car across the border to the U.S. It took about 10 minutes tops. They will also require a copy of the sales invoice. There is no duty or tax IF the vehicle was made in the U.S. and depending on the year of manufacture. The buyer (in this case you) had made arrangements with a U.S. carrier and we met at a convenient spot just over the border (in our case it was an outlet mall early one Sunday morning). U.S. Customs can walk you through the procedure. When you get the vehicle, I believe you have to approach your local DMV office, get an appraisal from a local appraiser, have the car tested and you get your ownership transferred. I am a little foggy on the U.S. side, but I used this procedure and it was essentially painless.
Talk to me if you need any more help. Maybe I can kick start the faulty memory and dig out some more information for you.

In 25 (plus) years in this hobby and business I have never had anything but problems with Canadian cars. For some reason most of the folks up north (most, not all) think because there dollar is lower in value then ours that we/I, as a Shelby buyer (or seller) should lower our price (or pay them more then their car is worth) to accommodate their dollar fluctuations.

Additionally, most of the time I hear "no" or "minor" rust we are talking big time rust. Their "rust" compared to our "rust" is night and day.

As far as titling - most of the Shelby's that have been offered to me, from Canada, have had some type of French written registration papers that (I am told) will past muster in the US and, depending on the state, get you your state issued title.

As far as getting it across the boarded, hire a boarder agent/shipping broker to handle the transaction. You want to have a smooth shipment to the US and NO customs problems. I am sure it is worth the several hundred dollars to have one less headache.

Good luck (you will need it)

  4. Stephen:
I cannot resist replying to your letter on importing cars from Canada. Let me help set the record straight as I know it, being a Canadian.
    1. Only cars from the Province of Quebec have French titled papers. The rest of the titles, in all the rest of the Canadian Provinces, are all in English.
    2. The weather in Vancouver, British Columbia, which sits directly above the State of Washington, is the same as in the northern part of the State of Washington. If it rusts in Vancouver, it rusts in Seattle.
And people in Vancouver speak English.
    3. I can assure all and sundry that the rust in Canadian cars is no worse or better than the rust in Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio and other States that experience winter and lots of snow. It is the salt that is put on the roads that causes the rust and it's the same salt in Canada as in the U.S. States that use it.
Sorry to hear you have had some problems in the past. Most of us are honest, but just like anywhere, unscrupulous sellers are not specific to a particular geographical location.
Again, as I am certain you would agree, the key to purchasing a Shelby or any other used car is to see it in person or have a trusted person inspect it for you before purchase. And it doesn't really matter whether that is California, Arizona or British Columbia.
If you do that, a whole bunch of good luck is not needed.
The point of view from up here in the "North", eh?
    Ron

Re: Buying a car from Canada Question-Update

Just an update for those wondering what the consensus was on the Canada buy.

It appears that I will require a signed registration from the seller.

A bill of sale with make, model, year, price, vin#. , notarized from the seller.

Then somebody in the process has two fill out the customs paperwork but it should be fine. No taxes either way since it was made in the USA.

Next my state requires a safety inspection ( would not require from another state) .

Then just pay the taxes and they will assign the title .

Now does anybody know a broker willing / able to travel to pick up the car and transport it to me for a fee? I would want them to pay for as well as acquire the customs papers and other paper work .

    Thanks,

    Tony Hardesty

    Tony:
You might ask the seller. He will probably know a broker in Vancouver area who could help you. Not sure how the transportation would work so maybe someone else has an idea??? Someone on the list from the State of Washington???
