Does anyone know where I can find info on troubleshooting/testing the sequential taillights and dynamite sticks on my 68 GT 500? Is there anything in the wiring besides the sticks that controls the sequentials? My signals don't work at all. Could it be just the flasher under the dash? Any suggestions? Thanks. 1968gt500
Re: Dynamite Sticks Do your flashers work? if not check for bad bulbs, bad connections and grounds. you can unplug the rear lights and see if the front still work, normal flash. Tout
Re: Dynamite Sticks Nope, nothing flashes. I'll try to disconnect the rear though and go that route. Do you know if you can ohm the Sticks with a meter? Is this the exact same setup as for 1968 Cougars? Are there any websites where I might find the schematics for this setup? Thanks. 1968gt500.
Re: Dynamite Sticks http://www.mustangproject.com/ try their setup for the lights. i have put them on 2 shelbys and 1 boss and they work great and are bright enough in direct sunlight so that you can actually see the lights!
Re: Dynamite Sticks They are not same as Cougar which uses a relay. I think what Tout is asking is do your emergency flashers work? When they are on (either directional or e flashers) do any lights, front or back or dash lights illuminate even though they may not flash? Lets start there. Tim
Re: Dynamite Sticks Lets start from the begining, have you checked the fuse? If good then check to see if power is at the fuse with a meter. If you use your turn signals do they light and just say on ? No lights would indicate no power, start looking for loose or broken wires. usally a bad flasher or bulb the lights will be on , but not flash. Hope this helps, Tout
Re: Dynamite Sticks Hi Do not over look your turn signal switch your turn signals and brake lights are routed in the turn signal switch. Mike
Re: Dynamite Sticks Thanks guys, I found a bad bulb, and a lot of corrosion in several sockets. Still have some work to do, but they sort of work now. Love these classic cars!!! 1968gt500.
68's Shelby's are known for killing turn signal switches. I am not sure what part of them fail, but I am keeping a spare just in case.
An interesting sidebar is that the stock Mustang tailight flasher is only a two lamp flasher which will not hold up to the current draw of the multi light taillamps used on these cars. I don't know if Shelby did it or if it was a dealership recall/replacement, but the one in my 67 survivor (39K miles and been of the road since 74) had been replaced with a vintage Ford four lamp flasher.
You are correct, there is a difference in flashers , you can see them on screwbay for around 60.00. They are marked for sequencal lights. Tout
believe it or not my rear brake lights failed at the same time my signals/ I Checked all the fuses and replaced signal switch first but.. didnt help ..Tried the ignition switches and wiring I replaced them both and presto all work I bought the LED sequentials and installed them ..work fine since they draw very little power By going this way your flasher would not have to be changed out at all..just a thought..
Cougars Unlimited has an electronic flasher can for about $30. Strong bright signal and it has correct (not choppy) speed. Tim
Ditto Tim's comments on Vic Yarberry's flasher can. I run it on my 70 Cougar and before installing them could barely see the lights sequencing at night.
When i had my 68 GT500 my rear lights did not flash right i bought a flaser and i un crimped at the bottom so the cover would come off . Once i got the top off i adjusted the contact points so the lights would flash the right way. Mike
Thanks guys. All flashers are working now, however, they aren't sequencing. Just flashing like a normal turn signal. Does anyone know a way to bench test the Dynamite Sticks themselves ? Thanks, 1968gt500.
