Dan I am interested to see who I am bidding against on a auction too. I have been considering hiding the bidders ID during some up coming parts Ebay auction's because of the practice of others soliciting bidders while a auction is still on. This sometimes keeps a bidder from bidding higher because they buy offline before the auction is over . I know it has happened before because I have been informed by buyers who were contacted during bidding. I myself have been contacted after bidding on items. I had one bidder contact me sometime after a auction was over to see if i had another one of the items I had listed for sale because after buying from someone who contacted him while bidding on one of my auction's he later received a bogus part . I wonder how many deals I have missed that I didn't know about. I understand your concern towards running up a auction but there are some legitimate reasons as well. What are your and the others on the list thoughts on this subject? I hated having to start running private auctions as well, but Bob hit the nail on the head. My bidders were contacting me out of courtesy and sharing the "offers" they were getting from the scammers. What I have done is run private auctions and offer to let my bidders know who they are bidding against to verify they are not getting "jacked". People seem to appreciate this. Until ebay decides to make it possible to show a bidder's user id , but at the same time not allow somebody not involved in the transaction to freely contact (solicit) them, myself and others will be forced to run private auctions, IMHO. I too hate not knowing if I am bidding against the owner or a real live buyer. We have to wonder how long before all the bad guys ruin ebay completely? At least they are getting better at quickly pulling the scam auctions with hijacked pictures. i agree with Bob in some cases. I like to see who Im bidding against but then again if the guy has a private auction and also a reserve then whats the point of having his buddies shill bidding it up. I do almost all no reserve auctions and trust me I get tons of email from bidders saying they have been spammed by someone else trying to sell them the identical parts and circumventing Ebay, I usually forward the email to ebay. private auction is the only way to go on selling a car out there. I use Private auctions when I sell my cars on ebay. For one, I don't want bidders on my cars to be solicited by others with items for sale and more importantly, alot of buyers don't necesarily want others to know what they are buying. Typically when I am at an auction in person, I have someone from the auction company bid on my behalf so people cant watch me bid and then piggy back me thinking "well if a dealer's buying it, it must be a good deal"! IT HAS HAPPENED! Most real bidders will email and ask questions or call my number that is always listed as well. If a Private Auction looks to be unrealistic, it probably is.
