Hello Ron, I thought I would share my experience buying a Canadian car from
Quebec which was a mixed bag. First I bought my 69 Boss302 from a broker who
acted as the middle man and transported the car into the US so no problem
there. Second I received the small title certificate (about the size of a
small postcard) but I didn't have any trouble transferring it in VA. I
didn't have any problems with the currency difference but I'm guessing
that's a case by case situation.
Last my car was a one owner 38K mileage car (repainted once) and was sweet
except for the car's underside was saturated in grease and the car had a lot
of underbody pitting. To clarify the grease thing I was told in Canada a lot
of the cars were greased down inside (inside of doors, and under the carpet
etc ) to prevent rust and the undersides were sprayed with the old oil that
was removed from the motor . As for the pitting it was on every underbody
part , not horrible but it was still an issue to correct. I have never
cleaned so much grease, grime, and dirt from a car. I couldn't install my
door handles without getting my hands pretty greasy.I do think it preserved
it and the car certainly has turned out nice but it was a sure a heck of a
lot of work. Just my experience. Olaf

    Tony:
I am a Canadian and have the experience of selling a car to a U.S.
citizen. The subject of transport companies coming into Canada is a non
starter in our part of the Country. What I did, and perhaps you can get the
seller to do the same, is drive the vehicle across the border where it can
be picked up by the transport company. The procedure was very simple. I went
to the U.S. Government website (sorry I can't remember the correct name)
that covers importation and export to and from the U.S. You need to download
2 documents and fill them out. In my case, I was the exporter and importer
since I drove the car across the border to the U.S. It took about 10 minutes
tops. They will also require a copy of the sales invoice. There is no duty
or tax IF the vehicle was made in the U.S. and depending on the year of
manufacture. The buyer (in this case you) had made arrangements with a U.S.
carrier and we met at a convenient spot just over the border (in our case it
was an outlet mall early one Sunday morning). U.S. Customs can walk you
through the procedure. When you get the vehicle, I believe you have to
approach your local DMV office, get an appraisal from a local appraiser,
have the car tested and you get your ownership transferred. I am a little
foggy on the U.S. side, but I used this procedure and it was essentially
    painless.
Talk to me if you need any more help. Maybe I can kick start the faulty
memory and dig out some more information for you.
    Ron

Subject: Buying a car from Canada Question

I have found a car in Vancouver BC Canada.

Anybody bought a car from Canada before. What type of title do they have
and how does that work into a title in the states?

Any type of taxes from either side when purchasing?

Will transport companies pick up cars there for about the same price as
    in the states?

    Thanks for any insight.
