I'm surprised that the list, so far, has not commented on the big Ford news; 75,000 workers plus 14,000 salaried staff will be terminated plus several plants closed. My heart aches for the people who will lose jobs but in this cloud, there may be a silver lining. You don't suppose that among the 14,000 salaried staff, are the drones who were obviously promoted above their level of competence and who engineered the whole "let's protect our trade names and trample on vendors and owners" thingy? Anyone heard anything new on that front beyond the statement that Ford are re-thinking that whole episode?
Hopefully those that were re-thinking that ill advised program will still be employed at Ford.

This is the free market in action, and there are many sides to the
problem that got F where it is today, including high union demands and
bad management decisions. The good news is that the company is finally
forced to do something about its problems, and therein lies the
opportunity for its owners. This includes me now, because I've been a
buyer of the stock recently and expect it to go a fair bit higher. It's
the same with GM...they're fixing their problems and both companies will
come out stronger, and it appears that some of the solutions are
similar, for example, selling the retail financing division, or part of
it. I've enjoyed seeing GM stock move up in price and this has made it
out largest portfolio holding. It feels good to have a piece of these
companies that are making positive moves to secure a better future for
    themselves, their employees...and me.

The Indian automotive manufacturer Tata Motors is a strong bet too.
They have a $2,000 car that is going to put that country on wheels.

I hope my next big car company investment is at retail though...namely,
a new GT500 to park next to the one I've had in my garage since that day
I bought it from the dealer back in '68!

It is sad news for many Ford people.
My father retired from Ford about ten years ago after his 30+ years. This
is just the beginning of a whole new era for the UAW and all of the auto
companies. The no work and get paid deal will end next year and the cost of doing
business is going to be changing. There are going to be a lot of people
affected by reductions in pay and benefits as well as layoffs. We need to keep
an eye on GM and Delphi for indicators of what the future holds for all peo
ple in the U.S. (and Canadian) auto business.
There are going to be many things that are changing at Ford and I hope that
they are moving to a better future. It is too bad that many good people were
forced out or let go before the changes were made at the top.

    Lee:
You are right on with your comments. The auto industry looks much brighter for Canada because we have a government run health care system so that reduces benefit costs to the Big Three. There is news in this morning's Toronto Star that Ford and GM top executives have/are talking about some kind of merger???
Have to wait and see where that one goes. As for slashing the workforce, unfortunately, it rarely happens that the top dogs in any firm, particularly those who were promoted to their level of incompetence, the friends of friends, or old money people or.............always seem to escape the golden handshake. They seem to be fireproof, but maybe Ford has caught at least some of them in this recent round. And just perhaps, as I suggested earlier, the dough heads who came up with the ill conceived plan to persecute Mustang vendors and owners, will have been dealt with. We'll just have to wait and see.
