These are all listed for 68 Mustangs with 428's. Are some Shelby only? What would be the difference in application (which car they came in from the factory) between these trannys??? Was one for a 68CJ GT?
They are all variations of the 4spd toploader. Each code signifies a different transmission. Each transmission has a specific application. The RUG-S was used on 68 GT500s, the RUG-AE on 68 428 CJ cars, and the RUG-AE1 on 69 428 CJs. They were all used on Shelbys.
Great info! Is there a website to access such info? Would you by any chance happen to know what the tailshaft casting number should be on a RUG-S?? I've got a guy that wants to trade me one and I want to make sure it is correct.
A website? Sure try this one: http://www.4speedtoploaders.com/ and then stop by my website: http://www.thecoralsnake.com
I had looked at all of the toploader websites including that one. None of them listed the tailshaft that this tranny has. It is (I think because the casting is not clear) C8OR-7A040-D I can't find any info on it. I'm going to check out your website now!
Ah don't listen to that Coralsnake guy, he's clueless about non KR 500's From memory the tailshaft on a RUG S is a C6 and all of the mainbodies I've seen are C8's although I've been told they could have a C5 mainbody but I think they would have would have been the 67 versions. Tim
The one I'm talking about could be a C6 because the casting is so unclear (is that normal?) I'll have it in hand in about a week to do some closer investigating. But what about the "D" at the end of the number? Most of the tailshaft numbers I've seen posted are not a "D" for a shelby tailshaft.
I think you will find most websites show it as a C6 E. I seem to recall that is incorrect. I am not at home but when I get home later tonite I will check mine. The best source of data is as always, the cars themselves. Tim
That last poster is clearly trying to bait me. I like the C60R-D tailshaft answer. Only because I have one that is numbers matching to #1628. Hi Tim!
From my experience having had a LOT of them apart, they have in common; 2.36 Low gear, Ford's version of a close ratio transmission. 1 3/8" Diameter ten spline input shaft. a 31 spline main shaft. Due to their heavier duty, larger gears these transmissions do not shift as fast at the T-10. There are a number of modifications that can improve on this.
