They were stamped at Ford. Not all 68 trannies were stamped but if so it would be on the drivers side upper ear.

By federal standard both automatic and manual trans would have been stamped by Ford. Of course we can find examples where trans have been replaced by owners or under warranty.

Always have seen the VINs stamped along the flange where the trans meets the bellhousing except in 67 four speed examples for some reason

Absolutely they were "supposed too'. Not sure they jumped right in or had great consistantcy as there are many examples (blocks/transmission) that don't have them or had stampings in configurations different than what we conventionally see. There are quite a few cars with cyl heads stamped instead of block. My block has a stamping that is more like a date code than a VIN. All the ones I've seen have been NJ cars.

A friend of mine was a service writer at the local Ford dealership in the late '60's, early 70's. He told me about the tech who was doing new car prep and how much of an idiot he was. It seems that he was tasked with installing a CB radio on the floor of a new Ford truck. He had to drill the floor for the mounting brackets. Apparently he thought that Ford truck floors were made out of aluminum and about 1/2" thick. He stopped drilling when he hit oil. When they discovered what he did, they drilled out the hole in the trans case, threaded in a 1/8" pipe plug and gave it to the customer without saying anything. The service manager said "We'll fix it when it comes back in under warranty"

I just looked at a RUG-C from a 67 390 Fairlane and the full vin was stamped on the little square foot at the very bottom of the trans near where the tailshaft mounts. interesting.

I had a 67 427 Fairlane that was assembled, I think, in St Louis. Vin was
7H40W The VIN was stamped on the bottom rear of the trans case.
