When I purchased my 70 Shelby Convertible some 11 years ago I also got a set of Shelby tires with the car. These tires are unused and have the Shelby name on them plus the Cobra logo. I have never seen another tire like them and wondered if anyone knew anything about them. Were they made for Shelby and sold through one of his companies back in the day? Thanks Paul
"Back in the day" to most of us means 1965 through 1970. But I imagine Mr Shelby might have gone into the tire business during the mid to later 1970's while he had his wheel business going.
He is in the tire business but it is Goodyear tires. I have never heard of or seen any Shelby tires. Could you post a picture? I'm intrigued. Randall
Hi Randell Will try and post a picture in the next few days so someone might be able to identify these tires. Paul
Shelby Sixty tires were made by Uniroyal rubber in the early to mid 1970's and sold by everyone from K-Mart to J.M. Fields - They were RWL tires that were of the same composition type as the polyglass belted tires of the mid to late 1960's - The tires were cheap (really cheap) as most were for 13 inch import car wheels and I have a few ad's that were run, in different magazines, and they have Carroll's pixs in the ad's.................... SGB PS and BTW - The tire was cast out with a cobra on the tire (on the sidewall) - If the guy who has a pair takes a close-up of the tire you can see the cobra cast in the rubber! PSS I know two guys who havethe original molds and were planning on sending the molds to vensaualla to have a run of the tires made but Carroll (and/or his people) said no Most likely for liability reasons above anything else..................
Stephen Thanks for your detailed reply. I have always wondered how they came about. Are these tires worth anything now as the ones I have are in mint condition? Paul
Who was asking about Shelby tires? Found this; Doesn't quite have that classic Goodyear image. Kind of looks like the old Mickey Thompson tires.
Re: Who was asking about Shelby tires? That is a Shelby tire add from the early 70s. They were sold through Simpsons- Sears cataloge , they also sold Mickey Thompsons for a short time. That is in western Canada. I dont recall them being sold for more than a year or so through Sears.
Re: Who was asking about Shelby tires? Yes, that was me. I have a pair of brand new ones that came with my Shelby when I bought it. They are still in my garage. Thanks for posting the advert TLEA. Paul
