I just ran across a set of 14x7 shelby 10 spoke wheels. To my understanding these were an option in late 66 on the GT350s. I am putting them on my 65 gt but can't find what tire size to use. Can anyone give some info on this? thank you in advance. David, SoCal
when trying to max out tire size, what will fit on one car will rub on another. Many modern low profile tires will fit, but are at odds with the vintage look the rest of the car exudes. That said, the stock tires that came on the Mustang (& Shelby) are very tall and skinny by todays standard. I have had 225/60-14 on the front of my '66 GT-350. They barely rubbed on the UCA when the steering wheel was turned to its limit. But I didn't like the look. Currently I have 195/70-14's in front. More sidewall looks better (to me), steers easier than a wider tire, and the suspension works better, imho, with a tire that is not so wide. Remember these suspensions were not designed with the modern profile tire in mind, and the tires are part of the suspension. The low profile tires will handle better, no question about it, and you can go faster with them. If that's your goal, then you will need to experiment to get the best fit for your individual car.
I'm looking for stock tire size "original." I have conflicting info. One source says it was a H-70-14 and another said F-70-14. Were these tires Blue Ovals?
According to the 1997 SAAC registry p.433, tires on '66 GT-350's were Goodyear Bluestreak size 6.95 x 14 . Equivalent to todays 185/75-14. http://www.kelseytire.com/pages/antique&classictires.html Z.
I just looked up the specs on that 695x14 and the tread width is only 4 in. I don't think that would be the tire they put on these 7 in rims. That sounds like a tire for the "steel style" rims.
original 10 spokes were 14 x 6.5 or 14 x 6.75 inch. The Magnum 500's were 14 x 6. They all got the 6.95 x 14 tire from the factory. Owners often later opted for a different tire, just like they do now. Z. 6s1117
Sounds good Z, thanks for all the help and info. I will be going to a local tire shop to test fit some tires as soon as I get some time. Thanks again David
Forgive the really late reply to the discussion... Here's a comparison of a stock OEM Hertz Magnum wheel and tire compared to a 10-Spoke shod with a G-70-14 10 spokes would have originally had F-78-14s, Hs were reserved for full sized wagons, but then again I have H-70-14s on the rear of my 66 and like the way they fill the rear fender wells:
