I have always been a Ford fan, my first was a 1951 Flathead that we put a Lancia 471 blower, 2 stromberg 97's and Weiand aluminum heads, which we promptly blew the plugs out of. I graduated to my next ford, a 63 Galaxy Convertible, with the FE 406 ci 405 hp. We installed 3-2's and what an awesome machine. In 1965 I was helping a friend who worked for Dick Landy in So. Calif. with his 64 K code comet Caliente and a 65 K code coup. One Saturday, in need of steel head gaskets, I drove to High Performance Motors and that is when I first saw the car of my dreams, a new 65 GT 350, I remember the silver steel wheels and the bright orange needle of the Tach and Oil Pressure gauge…. I was hooked. It took just a couple of years, a 64 Falcon Sprint Convertible, married with a 6-month-old before I was to again find the car of my dreams. I was working as a machinist with a guy Joe, who liked to buy and re-sell used cars, mostly Mustangs, Falcons and Fairlanes. One day at lunch Joe asked if I wanted to go along with him to look at a 65 GT mustang…. What I saw that day was not just a 65 GT Mustang, but a 65 GT 350…unfortunately Joe had been wounded in the Korean war and had several screws in his left legs, the first try at the clutch ended his desire to buy the car. When I went home that evening I told the story to my other half, and told her that I was going to see if I could buy this car. At the time I liven in a place called Saugus Calif, in the hills north of Los Angeles. I drove 34 miles each way to work in Burbank, through the mountains…..what fun that would be… me and the smokies…..flying over the old Sierra Highway, years before Highway 14 was turned into a freeway. Well the owner had recently bought a house in the Valley, and put his down payment money into the stock market while Escrow was closing…you can only guess, this was early 1967 and the market was really down, he was desperate for Cash, so I managed to scrape up $2,000, and offered him $1,850, we settled on $1,950 and I drove away with 5S501, and a case of Castrol oil….. What I learned about 5S501 from my friends at High Performance Motors, was that the Original buyer, I was the 3rd, had traded the car back to Shelby American for a Cobra in 1966, and before putting it up for sale again they added Quarter Windows and Brake Scoops, so I had a 65 that looked just like a 66 but retained all the goodies of the 65's…… All good things come to an end, and in 1969 so did my Marriage, she got the 64 Sprint Convertible, and I got my 3 1/2 year old son, our 7ft round bed and the Shelby…..What else did a guy need at 23 years old….
