hi My 67 was hit in the front many years ago but the shelby serial tag was salvaged from what was left of the inner fender. A matching serial number is stamped into the right inner fender above the shock tower. I can not find a ford VIN anywhere though. The original motor/tranny are gone. The drivers door does not have a tog on it and it doesnt appear that it ever did because there are no holes for it. Where else should I look for a ford vin? Also, I was planning on purchasing the SAAC registry book but they are currently out of stock. I was wondering if anyone out there who has one could take a look to see if my car is in there. I don't expect you to give my all the info on it since you had to purchase the book, I'm just curious to see if there is any info on it. Its number 02510. thanks for the help
Pull yhe top of the right fender back abit. You will have to remove the fender bolts. The vin will be on rear apron , under the passenger fender. Larry
This is why it is very helpful to be a SAAC member. The registrar could tell you this. #2510:GT500 completed 6/8/67,and shipped 7/12/67. to Robie Ford sales Ins. (Dorchester MA) Presently owned by Jeff Taylor (NH). And, if you are not Jeff Taylor, you'll want to send all the information you have about the car to the registrar as a new registry is being written for publication later this year. You want you name and your car in it don't you? And, anly a few, very few 67 Shelbys got the door tag. And the door tags aren't the official Vin any way. you can change the door, then what?
The door did have a tag on it when it left the San Jose assembly plant. when it Got to the Shelby plant, it was removed. the Shelby VIN Tag was placed over top of the FORD number on the Drivers side inner fender and the Shelby VIN stamped into the Passenger side inner Shock tower. you should have the FORD number on the right inner fender as mentioned above. without that or the original Transmission, you will not get the FORD VIN from anyone. contact Dave Mathews the 67 Registrar and follow his protocal from this point forward. you do not want to soil your car's history by doing the wrong thing or taking incorrect advice. best of luck to you!!
Thanks for that info. I purchased the car from Jeff Taylor. It's good to know that the history is all legit. You never know with these things.
The original trans is gone. Both left front inner aprons and the shock tower were replaced along with the right front inner fender since it took a good hit in the front many years ago. So the FORD number that was under the shelby tag is gone. The passenger side inner fender between the shock tower and firewall is still original though. Is the ford number stamped on the top of the lip--similar to where the shelby number is stamped on that shock tower? There are no front fenders on the car and I took a quick look in that area tonight but did not see anything except the shelby number above the shock tower. thanks again
Just in case it still might be there: Look under the factory assembly line "goo" they put between the inner fender and the outside fender. I thought they stamped the passenger side Vin twice. Once between the battery and the shock absorber mount, and another one a few inches reward of the shock absorber. Both of these are located on the rail where the fender bolts to, out of sight when the fender is bolted on.
So I checked the passenger side apron between the shock tower and the firewall but had no luck finding anything. I even sanded the primer off hoping it was just on there a little too thick covering the numbers, but no luck. I thought maybe I'd check with the Dealership but they're no longer there. So it looks like i'm kinda screwed unless someone has any other ideas? I'm going to try to get a hold of the previous owner to see if maybe he can help.
I think your best bet is to go back to the original owner or Jeff as you said thats who you bought the car off of and get as much paper work as you can. Old car registions, insurance papers etc.some states didn't treat the Shelby Vin# as correct and used the Ford Vin # to register the cars. There got to be a number somewhere still on the car. Good luck
Maybe a build sheet still exist around the underdash harness or under the backseat or under carpet. Not sure how often 67 Shelbys have build sheets. Somene else may want to chime in... A Marti report may help.
Finding a build sheet in a hanger car is very rare find. Most of the sheet's were thrown if found by the Shelby tech's during the conversion.
