68 GT350 with tilt wheel:starting is erratic. I've searched web as best I could, found very little on subject. I have unit out of car, and have the special wiring diagram for it. Am looking for tips on where to start, what to check.

First of all why are you suspect tiltaway? (Not saying its not) You may want to check connection between ignition switch and harness connector as they are notorious for this.

    Re: Tilt Away Steering column

Thanks Tim- A little history here. Shelby belongs to my 86 y/o dad ( I'm 67 and a "shade tree mechanic"!)and that's the only thing we've not been able to repair. A local enthusist concluded that the actuating cable was not original, and adjustment was required, so that may be suspect. Sometimes the car will start as it should, then after manupilating the steering column or opening the door, it will not complete the starting circuit. (All of this has been relayed by my dad; I have not worked on it at all, but intend to start today. I had located the special wiring diagram for the unit on ebay, and after looking at that,it appears that electrical, vacuum and mechanical parts all must be correct for a reliable start.) I will begin to troubleshoot this afternoon, and assumed that SOMEONE in the community would have experienced similar troubles. When I complete the diagnosis, I'll repost here. Thanks for the reply!

Coastie: I am the local that worked on your Dad's car. I check the starting problem and found that the automatic shifter safety switch was out of adjustment. Then once that was adjusted I looked at the tilt inself. I found that the relay was dirty and I took it apart and cleaned it. Then I adjusted the cable and the wheel actually worked, but didn't worked every time. It would work maybe 2 or 3 times in a row, and then not work at all. Your Dad told me that the cable was home-made by someone so thats where I got that idea from. I belive your wireing is OK and all that is needed is a good cleaning and lubed. Your Dad said that when the tilt was taked apart, a spring went flying out and they never found it, I don't know. But if you have the tilt out, bring it over and we can look at it. I think all it needs is lubed.
