I would think the clones would only be worth as much as it would cost to build one. Why would someone pay 100,000 if you can buy a fastback and build a clone for 30,000 to 50,000. Of course I still don’t understand why people are paying 20K over sticker for a brand new car so I guess anything could happen.

Hey Commissioner - Take a minute to think this one through.
Wealthy drunks with checkbooks is a great combination.

I did not know the number of "9" cars was that low. I had heard it was under 100. Mine is a "9" with black interior and a 4 speed. It seems most red cars I see on E-Bay were originally green.

This is a simple economics formula regarding "clones". The same rules apply to real cars. The e-bay 66 that has been recently discussed is a perfect example. It would cost a person 50,000 dollars to make that ebay car worth 60,000 dollars more than it is worth now. Similarly, as you noted..."I would think the clones would only be worth as much as it would cost to build one"
The same is true for a Shelby. The days of finding these things in barns (if there really ever was one) are over. Half cars, paper cars, air cars, cars resurrected from rusted hulks are the volatile component in todays Shelby world.. Try to find an unmolested Ford mustang fastback..for cheap. Clone prices will always be behind shelby prices... maybe a lap behind, but moving along almost as fast.

    Friday night

Clones are going up in value. But that's not all. Restomods, prostreet, customs , one offs ..whatever you want to call them seem to be what they (the so called smart millionairs) are throwing money at now.

Great paint, great interior, big rubber, trick suspension and 500 or more horsepower and you have the new trend. It may not clone anything and thats refreshing.

    But..

A 68 Ccode fastback restomod just sold for same or more than a 67GT500. If that 500 was real this seems like a strange new trend. A 69 Camaro Restomod (original 6 cyl car) just sold for even more... The white 67 500 looked good and had its own restomod features and aluminum 427, why was it out priced by a ccode fastback? Was that Shelby a rebody? would anyone care? or did they just need a sign that called it "hemi killer " or something similar.

well it appears the legend of the NY phone bidder may have been a lie -- i missed the 285k 68 500 vert auction -- but I saw the nice 68 350 go for 100k -- it was automatic -- you could argue that a 68 350 auto is the lowest on the foodchain not to start this debate -- maybe the 69 350 is the lowest -- no offense they are all shelbys and i love them

Might be currently correct but unfortunately I don't believe that will always be the case. We used to say the same with the Model A's, Early Ford V8's.......

We always figured you could hot rod an original but taking a hot rod and turning it back into a restored car did not make sense. We all found out that modified cars could become more valuable (by 3-4 times) than original or restored cars.

    Its all about demand.

That Black GT500 was a 1 of 1 car, good stuff. Black Exterior, White Top, Saddle Interior and A/C. 1 of 1.

My 67 GT500 is 1 of 10 in Wimbleton White with Auto and Air. Just totally restored it, actually not quite done. 9 Exist according to Dave Mattews at SAAC. When you start getting cars in single digits and then break that down to restored cars, gets exciting to think about.

Absolutely! I am thinking I need to get a liquor license for the shop and maybe we'd sell more cars!! No test driving, of course. :D

What makes you guys think that anybody that has money to spend is drunk and stupid. Why don't you just get drunk and see if it makes you rich. Most of the guys spending the big bucks are very smart and have worked very hard for their money.

I am surprised, I thought the Selby's may fetch more money. Not all were great cars however.

That is the biggest problem. We have no idea what a particular car is really like unless we have a report from somebody with knowledge about it or we get the opportunity to see them ourselves. A lot of cars have dirty histories and it don't take long for the word to get out. The great cars will always bring great prices. Two 1969 Boss 429's sold for $440,000 and $550,000 and Carroll's Cobra sold for an all time[Barrett Jackson] record price of $5,000,000.00. Sounds great to me.

It's not over until it's over. This didn't seem like a bad price for a car with a bonded title.

Cougar, I couldn't agree more. I don't think Barret is getting a ton of the quality 67's or 68's this year. Besides the one's they go out and recruit like the sweet 68 GT500 for $285k, I am guessing not a ton of people want to pay their listing fees and sales commissions for their quality Shelby's. It's like another $25k+ in most cases.

My understanding is that the cars there have not been that great from top to bottom. Some great unique or 1 of 1 stuff but not solid cars in between. Also, car buyers have grown a lot smarter and are not paying big $$ for the so so cars. New buyers hire guys to spec the cars out for them at Barret before they even begin to bid. For quality you still see the good prices.

All this said, lower prices on the KR's than I thought.

As I expect with the most of the value on the shelby #001 GT 350, That hummer sale was STRICKLY donation. You could see it in the mans eyes he was doing it from his heart no other reason.Glad to see there are good people like carrol himself out there that have a big heart. The man who bought the hummer was very emotional. He probally lost someone close or was in the military. Great american spirit either way.

Why no '65 or '66 Shelbys at BJ? It seems I always see the '67 and '68 cars. The only early cars were also continuation cars. We keep seeing the value of the '67, '68s go up at BJ each year, but there sure is a shortage of early Shelby's available for sale. The ones that do get auctioned sure are expensive (remember that Hertz last year that was far from correct).

There was one of the 12 1966 Shelby G.T. 350 Convertible continuation cars that went for $105,000.00. I thought it would have gone higher.

I agree - it wasn't about the vehicle, it was all about the Fisher House. Those guys both did a damn nice thing donating all that dough

Too bad Edsel's street rod didn't do quite so well, it was a donation car too...
