Is this also the correct color for 1966? Is there a specific type of paint
that will last and look good also? I appreciate anyone who has had good
experience, both can or spray gun.

As far as I am aware and have ever read, the engine compartment black paint was the same for all years 1964 to 1973. The best rattle can paint, according to the "experts" is Krylon. There are many opinions on the best paint for spraying out of spray guns, but from what I gather, PPG (bought out Ditzler) is among the best. You can also purchase quality black gloss paint and use a flattener until you reach the desired gloss. I am sure you will get some other opinions on this, but this is for starters.

Lee-FWIW, I've had good results w/SEMS interior vinyl spray in Black, of course. It gives a perfect low luster, comes in qt. cans or spray cans. You must stir well before using it from a can. I used a PREVAL sprayer for touch-up and it does a great job. Just be sure to let it cure as long as possible b4 touching, wiping, etc., at least a few days. Of course, in addition to engine bay, it's great for the interior panels.

If you are doing a resto from scratch, I'd recommend painting from a spray gun, and using a primer like PPG/Ditzler's DP90 (black), followed by the appropriate Ditzler semi-flat black - someone on the list will give you the number. If you are painting with an aerosol "rattle" spray can, I'd recommend Eastwood's "Underhood Black". I know many swear by Krylon's semi-flat black, which I've used myself with excellent results. But the Eastwood paint is a high solids composition, with a better delivery method (spray can doesn't have a cheap button) that rarely trips-up or causes runs. It does cost more, but the can is bigger and you need to use less paint. And from my experience, if you prep the surface properly, it wears better over the long haul (10 years or more).
