So i bought that aluminum t-10 off ebay with the wrong tail housing..... Looks REALLY good. I got it yesterday. im gonna swap my iron tail housing on it off my iron t-10......... two questions. What tag is the trans supose to have? and how many teeth are on the 2nd gear, gear? I wanna make sure its the correct ratio trans. before i go and get it all prepped for the car. Thanks - Roger
There were 3 T-10 tags in 65 Hek-R, Hek-V, Hek-M. There are two close ratio second gears possible 2.36 M ratio cluster 29,25,20,17 T second gear 29 T, 2.36 J or L ratio cluster 29,23,19,17 T second gear 30 T. Hope this helps.
whats the difference between M and J/L ? besides the 2nd gear tooth count? And do each one of these cluster types corespond with a specific tag? or no? Thanks - Roger
The tags I have not been able to figure out. The M and J/L are different ratios in 2nd and 3rd gear. Both have a 26T maindrive (input) and a 36T 1st gear. The M has a 29T 2nd and a 27 T 3rd, the J/L has a 30T 2nd and a 29T 3 rd. The clusters have to be different to accept the different 2nd and 3rd gears. M cluster 29,25,20,17 T, J/L cluster 29,23,19,17 T. If you get an explanation on the tags I will add it to my T 10 info sheet.
alright. I have an Hek-V iron t-10 in my garage. The aluminum t-10 i got has no tags, and the wrong tail shaft......a very knowledgeable guy i get parts from is swapping the tailshafts for me as i dont get into transmission stuff, i'll ask if he knows, and if i get any info, i'll report back to ya. Thanks - Roger
Hi, If I don't recall wrong that T-10 was assembled on April 29, 1965. Could have fit my 65 perfectly. /Texas Swede
Hi Roger, The aluminum one. Saw it in ebay myself but my friend bid on it so I didn't. My 65 Sheby 5S275 was assembled at San Jose' about May 7-10 and the assembly dates on the T-10 and the car are normally pretty close. /Texas Swede
Like to say thanks a million to this site which made it possible for me to get in contact with Roger (fastback272) and buy a correctly dated BW T10M1 for 5S275. The one I have had in my car for 19 years is assembled on July 8, 1965 which is more than two months too late. Got it and it has the correct gears (2.36 on first), side cover etc. Also, thanks Roger for parting with it. A very happy Texas Swede
no problem man!, thanks for buying it..... i sold the carb i had ( r model) now if i can sell those R model plenum and fuel bowl i'll be good. - Roger
Hi, The T-10 M1 dated D295 2 or April 29th, 1965, second shift is now rebuilt with all new M gears by a friend of mine that is a master with transmissions and rear axles. Later this week it will replace the T-10 M1 currently in my car. /Texas Swede
That's great you have the right one now. Question for the list members: The T10 M I have for # 17 does not have a tag, and I am not even sure what it would look like. Anyone know which tag, where it would be attached to the Trans. and how I can find the right one? Mike
5026 has the original transmission with no tag. I think that if the date code on the trans case and tailshaft is earlier than your car was built, (Which I am guessing was early Feb. 1965) you are home free. I wouldn't worry about the tag.
Hi Mike, These are my observations over the years for T10-M1's. Never seen any with a tag. Early 65 to mid production #300: No casted date on neither housing nor tail shaft. My new trans has none. Late production 65 # 400: Casted date on housing but none on tail shaft. Have seen several over #400 with this like 4-12-65. 66's: Casted date on both housing and tail shaft. My current one has 6-9-65 and F-7-65 respectively. They all have an assembly date just behind the side cover. See picture. My current one has G85 2, July 8,1965, Second shift. My new one has D295 2, April 29, 1965, Second shift. This is exactly five days prior to my engine assembly date. My friend has two in the #400 and both has three days between the trans and engine assembly dates. Both are original to the cars. All has a date code on the side cover as well as a date code on the adapter plate (not visable when assembled) Texas Swede
