override bars & tire clearance

    My first posting here.

    I have a question for the many experts here on this forum. Do the Override Bars on a '65 G.T.350 mount directly above the leaf springs. If so, am I correct in assuming that as far as tire clearance goes (if you chose to run wider than stock wheels/tires), the tire would rub on the leaf springs before they would come in contact with the override bars?

    They mount inboard of the springs.

    And that is why the early 65's have a platform instead of a rear seat.

    In order for Shelby to qualify the car for SCCA B production class (sports car) it needed to be a two seat car. The "package shelf" in 65's and some 66's is much lighter than the back seat, frame, trap door thing and associated hinges latches and upholstery the standard back seat came with so the weight savings was a plus. The overide bars and the bracket welded to the interior floor will still fit with the standard back seat.. (tight fit though)

    My brother's two early 66 Hertz cars have overrides and back seats. I believe the over rides came on 66's until serial #'s in the 700-800's. I'm sure someone may have a better idea of when the transition was. The procedure was labor intensive and thus costly. I believe that is why they changed to the under rides. The package shelf had nothing to do with the clearance issues, but for the reason as posted above. To make it a 2 seater.

    my car came with over ride bars i'm a 66gt350h #822 and my friend Anthony told me take shelby stopped doing over rides because it was very time consuming and costly good luck. :)

    My dad's 66 Hertz car (SFM6S817) has over-ride bars and a back seat. All the information I have indicates that it was a cost move to use under-rides. The rear seat could be left in place, welding was reduced, and the parts count (read cost) went down. It also seams that all under-ride cars had rebound (axle limiting) cables and that they were eliminated at the same time as the under-rides. Check out the scan from the 1966 Shelby parts bill of materials to see what I'm talking about.

    is your dads car black and gold? was it shipped to larsen ford in white plains new-york? our numbers are really close the car is in canada now .

    Paul,

    Yes and yes. I have to bill of sale from Shelby to Hertz and Larson is listed as the dealer. They even serviced the brakes for less than $15.00.
