Hello, About four years ago, I purchased a 1967 Shelby GT500 wood steering wheel. I was recently looking on eBay for approximate current values because I have considered selling it as I do not have a real GT500 and think that there is probably a better owner out there for the wheel. I bought the wheel from a guy that really knows a lot about Mustangs and Shelby's. He had been buying and selling these cars for about 30 years and has recently gotten out of the business. (He has one 1966 GT350 Hertz car with documentation to prove that it was one of the first five sold to Hertz from Shelby Automotive.) He used to have a 67 Shelby, which he sold, and had this wheel as a spare. He said he got it 20 years ago off of a wrecked Shelby that was at a junk yard. The only thing is, I was looking at one on eBay and noticed some differences from mine and it has me concerned. I am pretty confident it is not a repro since I had purchased it before the repro's were available. Here are the differences: On the back of the "eBay wheel" it is missing two pins that mine has in the back where the hole is for the steering column. Mine also has a logo that says "Shelby Cobra G.T. 500" where the eBay one just says Shelby Cobra. Now I thought maybe this was because mine was from a GT500, but I looked at this guys GT350 Wheel and it said "Shelby Cobra GT350" Am I missing something? Mine looks identical to the one in this picture otherwise I have posted a link to the auction in case you have time to check it out. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&viewitem=&item=300102729433 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&viewitem=&item=300102729433
It sounds like you have a 66 wheel with a different horn button. send me a front and back picture as I might be interested in it. e-mail me at jed@craftech.com Thanks- Dave
Here are some pictures. The wheel needs to be cleaned up. It has been in my closet for the past four years. From all indications from the previous 66 vs 67 posting, it appears as if I have the 66. How much would this wheel be worth today? I saw one from a 66 sell last year for $7,000 on eBay. Is there any indication as to what it is worth today? Regards, Stewart
The previous owner told me that it had a center sticker for a GT 350, but it was damaged, so it was replaced. He said that the original sticker for the horn button was in the box, which I looked at. It is damaged. Just more information...
contact Dave Mathews the 1967 Shelby Registrar for SAAC. he is quite fluent in these wheels. his e-mail address is 67registrar@saac.com
