New on ebay there is a 66 that the seller wants $234,000 for. Car is in fantastic condition but is a green non supercharged 66 really worth that kind of coin? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1966...55QQihZ011QQcategoryZ6465QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Same ebayer as the previously threaded 65 GT 350! Thoughts on this car and the market in general would be great! Would love to get opinions from some 66 owners if I could! Thanks Vern
said it before and I'll say it again...dealer looking to hit a home run with some guy walking through the door with money hanging out of his pocket and aching to buy a Shelby even it's not such a good deal... you need to look at private sales against dealers and average them out to get the real values. If you pay attention to dealers prices too much you'll get a skewed image of prices. Half the time these dealers sell purported "premium" cars, but have no idea what they're selling which usually winds up being a wrecked car of one with a colorful past....did you catch the fuel pump? That's right!! For 200+ K you too can own this shelby with the $25 NAPA fuel pump which is not even close to the original. At that price it should have a NOS 4201...but who's really looking anyway?
I agree with you that the price for this car is unreasonable but the real question is.....Is a premium, all nos/origional car worth the asking price. I am torn! Best Regards Vern
No! not to me anyway. The real joy I get out of mine is driving it. The current dollar value of these cars is keeping alot of them from being driven. Larry
I absolutly agree that these cars are best enjoyed driven but i do feel that an all origional 66 could bring top dollar very easily. I guess we will just have to wait and see what the market does next! Best Wishes Vern
It wont be long until most shelbys will be living in glass cases overpriced by greedy dealers ! enthusiasts scared to drive them in case they damage thier shelby so less and less will be at your local car shows. The only people who would be paying top dollar for shelbys will be investors and not enthusiasts.
I absolutly refuse to believe that clones will ever prevail over the real thing! (ALL HAIL THE REAL DEAL!) VERN
Probably people thought that about 32 Ford Roadsters and original Cobras. If Tony Branda's business was to rely on original replacement parts for real Shelbys he would be operating out of his garage for 3 months then he would be out of business. I don't think that clones will ever be any where near as cool as the real deal.. BUT!! jimbo
It's all ready happening. I went to the AER show in Dallas today. There is generally about a dozen in the vintage Shelby Mustang class. Today there was 8 in the class. Two were clones and one was a Elenore. I didn't stay for the awards, but I would be willing to bet some of the class award winners never saw the inside of Shelby American or A.O. Smith. Larry
Dont get me wrong, i respect clones, repos...whatever people feel like calling them to make them seem less fake. i feel that they can be great to drive and enjoy with hardly a care in the world. not everyone can afford the real thing so they buy a clone to get into the hobby. However, nothing will ever take over the place of the real deal. the real thing is untouchable and will forever stay that way. Furthermore, i dont like it when people try as hard as they can to sell a clone by beating around the bush with phrases which attempt to make the car sound legit. It is a growing trend and is a huge problem. I guess all we can do is be smart when shopping by researching our purchase! Best Regards, Vern
Vern, With a factor of between ten times and five times the price difference between a clone and a real car, .....and buzz words like "divorce forces sale of cars found in barn".. I wonder if the real culprit is someone who if fooling themself. I think the fraud in this business is 99% "number jobs that have been re-bodied for 30 years" and "one wrecked car producing two new ones", and 1% ......people trying to get an extra few grand out of their clone by not stating in the advertisement that this car is a "Total sleezebag rip off fake.... Shelby never touched it... Unless you are a complete fool do not come see my car" Really, jimbo
Eljimbo, I dont think you are getting what im saying! I never said that someone should discredit thier own car. all i said is that people should be honest about what they have. I get the feeling that you think that what i said was meant to be a low blow. what i said happens and everyone knows it. I RESPECT CLONES, GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEAD! Furthermore, i love it how people can quote others in any way they see fit. In your quote, by leaving out the last sentence, you completely manipulate what it said into something that better fits your argument! You need to sit back, relax, take a deep breath, and cool down. Best Regards, Vern vernon_estes@yahoo.com
Vern, I'm sorry you interpreted my post that way. I didn't intend to dispute your feelings, I was just adding to them. I have zero problems with clones, or the credit or lack of ...that they get. I just don't see them as in competition with real cars in any way. jimbo
What you all are batting around is one aspect of clones. What about the new twist where ultimate restomods bring more than realdeals. I could not believe a c code 68 fastback with big horsepower and modern suspension and shelby fiberglass out priced a real 67 GT500 at the January BJ auction by 30 or 40 grand. ....and everyone knew what that car was.
Eljimbo, I hope there are no hard feelings as both of us obviously misunderstood each others posts. As for 65gtfastback, I totally agree with what you are saying. I was at BJ and witnessed many cases of repos/hot rods/restomods selling for better prices than the real cars that they are inspired by. To tell you the truth, i really cant give a strong answer as to why this is. Maybe the buyers are of a younger generation and would rather have something more modern. Im really not sure, Vern
I think there is a simple economic explanation. As time goes by they both become more and more rare, and the demand keeps increasing. In order to make a great 67 clone you need a great 67 fastback (still a damn nice car and investment).. A new Shelby was only 25% more money than a new Mustang. I would cost almost as much to restore a perfect 6 cyl automatic fastback as it would to restore a GT 350. In my opinion it is not that the clones are keeping the prices of Shelbys down.. The mustangs are just slower to catch up in value. Shelby prices are more volatile. Who do you think would stand to make more money in the next five years. A guy with one perfect 250,000 Shelby, or a guy sitting on 10 perfect 25,000 C-codes? Jimbo
i highly doubt that something like that will ever happen on any substantial scale. I feel that real enthusiast are more likely to pay top dollar because of their outright appreciation for the car. Cars are meant to be enjoyed and as long as there are genuine enthusiasts out there, there will be cars on the road and at local shows. Is it wrong for me to not want to harm my shelby? That in no way means i would ever refrain from enjoying it. Best Regards, Vern
