1967 Shelby GT 500 steering wheel

    How do I remove the steering wheel off this car?

    very very carefully! start by disconnecting the car battery. that is very important. next caefully remove the Horn center and disconnect the wires. remove the Nut holding the wheel on. now the wheel is being held in place by the splines on the shaft and probably 40 years of accumulative buildup! you can spray a light lubricant, nutbuster type of product and let it soak for an hour. Now at this point you can sit in the car, brace your feet against the floor and your knees on the steering wheel spokes. your hands on the wood of the wheel and start to apply pressure with your knees and work the wheel with your hands at the same time. this is one of the safest procedures I know to remove them.     And don't forget to put the retaining nut back on with a couple of threads
    before the pulling and tugging and nasty comments start. Don't ask how I know. Just do it.

    I'd advise against pulling anywhere on the wood section. Those black plasic spoke-to-wood adapters are very fragile. Aren't there two threaded holes down in the cup to thread the steering wheel puller bolts into?

    Yep, Thats right.....NO provisions for a steering wheel puller. Just good old
    elbow grease and LOTS of Patience!

    I would suggest having a second person. One in the driver seat pulling on the centre hub, and the second person standing to the left with a hammer and a 1/2" flat punch. With the nut loosened, but still attached, use the hammer and punch to shock the wheel off. I find it works very well. Usually takes about four to five blows to pop it.
