Can anyone tell me if the crankshaft I have is in fact a Shelby forged crank? The information I have with it says S.N. MEM 1656. I got it along with alot of Shelby and non-Shelby 289 parts from a relative. Thanks!

289's used cast cranks. A cast crank will have a very thin parting line whereas a steel crank will have a wide parting line of about 1/8" - 1/4" wide. The hipo cranks were check for hardness and that is the only difference. Hope this helps.

Possibly ? Contrary to popular belief there were factory forged 289 cranks. I have a complete original "C6FE" GT-40 4-bolt main 289 engine and it has a forged steel crank and a fully degreed balancer. The only markings on the crank were a reversed "1M" in one of the throws, thats it. It's been highly polished and de-burred, but is most DEFINITELY a forged steel 289 crank from Ford. I was told when I bought the car that the engine was a Ford factory sponsered race team engine only (made in VERY limited numbers) and was never offered for sale to the general public. Therefore, not many people have ever seen one, or know they exist. But I know they do ....
