Hi Guys What i would like to know is what radiator they used for the 65 R Model? I allways heard that they used a bigger one so it would cool down the engine better during racing. Who can tell me what radiator they used. Out of what car? Thank you very much for your help! Bye Jerry
dont know much about size but i did see that the origional shelby design drawings sold on ebay for over a few hundered dollars on ebay a few weeks ago. best wishes vern
Hi I was talking about the R Model radiator. Does anybody know where i can purchase one? Most sell just regular Mustang stuff. Bye Jerry
I think you're right. I still have the original radiator for my old R-model 5R213. I do recall it being out of a Galaxie. Jay
Hi Jay You had a R Model???? Do you still have pictures from it? Or can you please please please explain to us how it was to drive that car? Feed me with info! Thanks Jerry
I owned it from 1998-2003. I bought it, restored it, and then decided I'd rather have a 427 cobra. The person I sold it to is taking it to a Montery auction in a month or so. R-models are neat cars. However with no interior and open exhaust, the best way to describe them is kind of like riding inside a tin can. The noise is crazy. Unless you are going to race. Your best bet is a 65 or 66 shelby street car if thats the body style your after. Just my opinion. Jay
Hi Jay Well here in germany you know we have higher speedlimits. My racetrack will be open street. The big advantage of driving on the street is when some idiot runs into my car i see money from the insurance. On race tracks there is no insurance. I will not drive without brain don´t worry but here i can let it go easily 120 mph in certain places or open end on the autobahn. Do you still have pictures of yours? Could you post some? Can i send you a massage in case i have a question? When you restored yours you probably know things best?! Bye Jerry
The R-Model radiator was a Galaxie unit. To install it in a Mustang required cutting out the core support because of the increased width of the big radiator. There are a number of 65 Shelby owners who fitted their cars with the R-model radiator and regret doing it today.
Hi Bill In an original GT350 i wouldn´t do it either. But for my G.T. 350R clone no compromises. Do you agree? Bye Jerry
You don't have to "cut open the core support" any wider than the normal Mustang has already. The radiator for the 289 Galaxie is 20" wide. But it is 17" tall so you might have to adjust were there the raditor sits so it clears the hood. Another thing to look at, some core supports have a lip that the original rad attaches to, which brings the radiator closer to the engine. You might want to cut this off so your fan won't be so close.
Con't reply..next time you look at a Mustang you will notice it's puny 16" radiator has about 1.5" of open space on either side of it. You need to fill that opening with a bigger radiator...like from a 289 Galaixe! It fits the whole opening.
