Radiator Size R Model

dont know much about size but i did see that the origional shelby design drawings sold on ebay for over a few hundered dollars on ebay a few weeks ago.

Hi, I believe 65 R models used 427 Galaxie radiators.

Radiator on the 65 gt-350 came from the 65 Galaxie w/ 289 with the air option.

 

I think you're right. I still have the original radiator for my old R-model 5R213. I do recall it being out of a Galaxie.

I owned it from 1998-2003. I bought it, restored it, and then decided I'd rather have a 427 cobra. The person I sold it to is taking it to a Montery auction in a month or so.

R-models are neat cars. However with no interior and open exhaust, the best way to describe them is kind of like riding inside a tin can. The noise is crazy.

Unless you are going to race. Your best bet is a 65 or 66 shelby street car if thats the body style your after.

The R-Model radiator was a Galaxie unit. To install it in a Mustang required cutting out the core support because of the increased width of the big radiator. There are a number of 65 Shelby owners who fitted their cars with the R-model radiator and regret doing it today.

 

You don't have to "cut open the core support" any wider than the normal Mustang has already. The radiator for the 289 Galaxie is 20" wide. But it is 17" tall so you might have to adjust were there the raditor sits so it clears the hood. Another thing to look at, some core supports have a lip that the original rad attaches to, which brings the radiator closer to the engine. You might want to cut this off so your fan won't be so close.

 

Con't reply..next time you look at a Mustang you will notice it's puny 16" radiator has about 1.5" of open space on either side of it. You need to fill that opening with a bigger radiator...like from a 289 Galaixe! It fits the whole opening.
