I have a very annoying oil leak. the engine is a newish built in 2000 (ford replacement block for 1987-1993) and has 3000 miles on it which is in my 1967 mustang. i have replaced the water pump and the hoses around it. there is no oil dripping down the front of the pan as i would expect from a front oil seal going. the oil is spraying from the area between the crankshaft damper and the crankshaft pulley. looking inside from the front. the pulley is dry, but there is oil around the crankshaft bolt and washer. can anyone tell me how oil would get here if the seal is ok? i have replaced the oil pan gasket too and no change. the car is also an automatic. when looking up between the damper and oil pan, the shaft of the damper appears dry as it has dirt on it. any help would be appreciated
Check the other accessories, it could be slung from them. If not, it could be a bad Crank letting the Oil walk out between the Crank Snout and the Balancer. You might be able to use a High Temp Sealer to fix it.
the only accessories i have is alternator. its a ford racing crate engine with an aftermarket damper. how likely is it to be a bad crank?
Before you get too far down this road go back and look at the usual suspects. Front and back valley gaskets to intake manifold, oil splashing out of the fill tube. (are the baffles still in place?) Is the oil slinger disc on your crankshaft there.stuff like that. There are UV additives for oil that can help you chase down oil leaks with an ultraviolet light (UV).. ...sorry about your problem, some little things can just drive you nuts ....there is nothing quite like the sound of the distributor drive shaft as it slides off the end of the distributor... down into the oil pan.. ...clunk! I have seen it before. A lot of "Crate Engines" are built usinging "Re-Built or Re Machined" parts like the Crank. If the Crank was Re-Machined (turned), then it should have stampings on it such as 10/10, 10/20, 20/10, and I have even seen 30/30, 30/40. The numbers tell you how much the Crank was turned (Main Jurnals / Rod Jurnals). Sometimes they will do a quick polishing on the Snout and sometimes they wont even touch it. If it is a NEW Crank, it could still have flaws. Your Timing Cover could have a small Crack by the Crank or the Water Pump or by the Fuel Pump. I do hope that it is something real minnor and easy to fix.
there are no leaks from the manifold or the oil fill tube. the engine was direct from ford so would have thought would be unlikely to be a second hand crank. what year did they stop doing the oil slinger? mine was cast built in 2000. i also put a piece of card over the front of the pulley and masking tape around it so sealing it in and there is oil inside after driving it.
Sounds like the Oil is walking out between the Crank and the Balancer. Pull the Balancer Bolt, Clean it and the area real good and put some High Temp Sealer on the edge of the Crank to seal it to the Balance and behind the Bolt Washer. Then do the same test with the Paper taped to it.
