Other thank the Date Code, is the VIN stamped into the block on a 428, or any other blocks for that matter? If so, is it stamped anywere else?
No, casting date only, by the oil filter adapter. 67s had a vin # on top of 4spd trany, dont know of other models or years.
Not sure what year you are asking about but since we are "talking" Shelbys yes I've seen original 428 blocks in original cars with the Ford VIN stamped on the block and trans This supports documents that state that the practice started in 63 with high performance engines and trans at Ford
I found the vin stamped on the top of the tranny case. I didnt find a vin stamped on the 428 PI block for my 68 GT 500 just the correct casting date. I would like to know where the vin was stamped on the block b/c when i pulled my motor for rebuild i didnt find one. And when i asked a shelby expert i was told just the tranny had the vin stamp. I put faith in casting dates those cant be faked or restamped. Hope this helps.
67 Shelby's had their FORD Vin stamped on the Bottom of the trans (4 Speed cars) they had 428 PI engines in 67 and 68 early cars. I have never seen a VIN Stamped in any PI engines myself. the 428 CJ engines are the opposite. they did have the Vin stamped on the back of the Block driver side. there is a pad below th cylinder head. you need a mirror and a bendy light to see f the engine is in the car.
Ok let's first make sure we compare "apples with apples" as different years and plants did things differently Fords Tech Service Bulletins indicate TSB #1757 Engine stamping location change on 390, 427 and 428 engines. Changed from machine pad on left front side of block to right bank adjacent to the cylinder head. In 67 at San Jose we find that the top loaders were normally stamped on the small pad on the bottom rear of the main case - I've found the VIN as listed above In 68 at NJ the trans is often stamped with the VIN on front flange of the trans were it meets the bellhousing and the engine at the drivers side rear on the head (possibly the reason some blocks no longer have VINs or the block In 69 at Dearborn we normally find the trans stamped again on the flange (pretty typical of all plants that year) and the block stamped on the drivers side rear Know plenty of people that have altered casting dates so IMHO I would take anything you see with a grain of salt A little epoxy or JB Weld does the trick
68 NJ 428s are typically stamped on the back of the cylinder heads and in some cases the PIs were stamped on the rear of the aluminum intake.
So...the blocks were not stamped with a FORD VIN? Just the cylinder heads and the aluminum PI intakes...good to know. Snakepit...it is sad that people re-stamp things...now they are faking casting dates?...whats a guy todo?
