Question: How do you find out the original color of the stripes on a '69? I believe my Candy Apple red car could have white or gold. Nothing on the Marti report or on the register. Any Ideas?

All red cars originally used gold stripes. I believe, There is only one stripe color for each color.

That's what I thought, but in the book 'Shelby Mustang-Racer for the Street' it shows a nice red '69 Sportsroof with the white stripes, instead of the gold. I think this looks much nicer, myself, and my car has the white interior too, but I don't want to make the car incorrect either.....

Hi: I cant remember where I saw this information, but I have always thought that red cars and maroon cars could have come with white or gold stripes.I have seen both. I also read that fastbacks, which were built from Mach 1s all had the Mach1 red stripe in the seat. I have seen cars with no stripe in the seat and when asked the owner became very defensive,so not looking for an argument I agreed and left well enough alone. In 1976 I saw a black 69 Gt500 with white interior wearing Alberta plates. The car was imaculate, but never got to speak to the owner. 69 seem to be a mystery to me?? All literature that I have seen do not show black as an option.

I was wrong, and stand corrected. Shelby American Guide 2nd edition page121 . Color and srtipe combinations for 69 Shelby GTs. Black Jade and Acapulco Blue cars received white stripes. Silver Jade cars got black stripes, Pastel Grey (off-white) cars got blue stripes and Gulfstream Aqua and Candy Apple red cars got gold stripes. Royal Maroon cars came through with either white or gold stripes. There is no mention of the grabber colors and stripe combos. Id still like to know if that 69 500 fastback, black with gold stripes that I seen in 76 was a repaint or a special order? I hope this helps more than confuses.

So, do you think (like the black car) it was possible (for a dealer) to special order what a customer wanted? You often hear of 'special order' stuff on cars, or is that just a myth? Anyone have anything (factory) special on their cars?

I have the book"Shelby Mustange Racer For The Street" and looked at the pictures of the 69s with white stripe. Could they be competition orange and look red in the light? I dont know. I have seen 2 red with white stripe carsone 350, one 500. Black cars with gold stripes,I have seen 5, of which 3 were repaints. Special orders? not here. The cars were not thateasy to get, so I think the dealers took what they could. Maybe different inthe larger centers of the U.S.. Remember the playboy car was white and then painted pink, if they had to color change others would too. I also didnt find the above book very accurate, but nice pictures. Just my opinion.

If you plan on keeping the car then do what makes you happy. If you plan on selling then put the factory correct stripe on. I did what makes me happy.

My 69 Grabber Orange GT350 came with white stripes.

I'd put the color on that you like most as the car could be re-striped later if it was important to go stock.
