This car is for sale here in LA. Not every day you get to go to a local dealer and see an R-Model. I have to say it was pretty unimpressive. For that kind of money I would have expected either a very original car or a very well restored car, this is neither. I would have least spent a few hundred dollars and come up with a decent graphics package there's no way those numbers could be seen at speed. http://www.heritageclassics.com/ford/65gt350r/Page.html
I visited this dealer when I was in LA....R model is nice, looks to be updated for vintage racing. They had a nice 70 Boss 302, a tiger, and a R model clone vintage racer...Dealer is right on Santa Monica Blvd near Beverly Hills, maybe thats why its pricey...
WOW......I learn something new every day and today I learned that the 1965 R models used 1966 Grills. That is, if the above photos are correct.
The sole reason for my other post regarding R-Model questions. I have seen more than one R Model with a 66 grill. Mainly on the late 500 number cars. The earlier ones have the 65 grill. I am wondering if this is because these cars where actually 6R09K's since Ford was most likely in 66 production by the time these where built as R-Models. This particular car has the 1966 side stripes as well!
Nope they were all 1965 San Jose based chassis, you have to remember in the later 1965 model year, the R models did not sell well, the 1966 taped side stripes and 1966 grill were just a way to slightly update the car for what was expected in 1966 and were sold in that calendar year. 5R533 did not sell til 1967.
Hmmmm.....Looks like it USED TO BE 5R530. There's so much wrong with this car I can't even begin to list the things. For starters the car has obviously been "clipped" making it practically worthless. Notice the rivets are new aluminum rather than steel on the VIN tag. Also the font is incorrect on the tag as well as the passenger side shock tower. The "SFM" and "R" are the right size but "530" is waaaay too small. To list a few other things I see in the photos that are obvious: - Front apron is the early style R-Model vs. the correct later style with the slotted brake cooling ducts. - '66 Grill - '66 Doors - Repro front fenders - Repro trunk lid Not much left and what was there was restored wrong...I'm sure a look up close would reveal probably a zillion other things. Priced about 750K too much for what's there...
This is one of 2 or 3 "R" Models that came back to the U.S. out of Peru in the mid 80's. According to the last Shelby Registry was Peruvian National Champion in late 60's. Unfortunatly it was in a racing accident that killed a dozen spectators in Argentina. This is probably why a lot of the pieces are not correct. Other than the fact only 37 "R" Model were built, part of the value is racing history. Although it's not the cars fault, I wouldn't be comfortable driving it knowing the history.
Just my two cents..... I feel that regardless of anything else, 950K is a strong number for any R in general. I think that in order for an R model to be worth 950, it must qualify as one of the following. -won a national championship/extensive race history (by races i mean races of importance and provenance) -in origional untouched condition -restored to perfect cosmetic and mechanical condition This car obviously does not satisfy any of these regulations to the slightest degree!
