    Hi,
Can't help you with Question #1 but as regards #2,
67 GT500 were made from 390GT Mustangs with DeLuxe interiors.
The 67's didn't have lowered front ends like the
65's and early 66's. Also Traction Masters were added
by dealers or previous owner. I found 6 pages from the San Jose
factory showing the items added and deleted under my
back seat on 67402F7A01317 back in 1977 and the list is
too extensive to write down here. This was at Ford and
then you have to add everything that Shelby did.
My 67, bought in 1977 had Traction Masters when I bought it
but it wasn't a factory option. Also, 10-spokes and Kelsey Hayes
were optional and I believe most cars came through with 6" or 6.5"
steel wheels with 67 Thunderbird hubcaps with a cobra emblem.
If you send me a personal email, I can scan the 6 pages and
attach them to an answer to your email. The quality of the pages
aren't the best as there were some type of tar on a couple of the pages.

Texas Swede if you don't mind me asking what is the date or DSO number from your group of sheets?

Think I've got copies of 4-6 of the groups and I'm always looking to add to the collection

A couple of small adjustments to your response if you don't mind ;)

"67 GT500 were made from 390GT Mustangs with DeLuxe interiors."

Not really "made from 390... " but those are the specifications that Ford started with to create what Ford and Shelby agreed upon

    Hi,
    D.S.O. is 84-2555 and date 1-11-67,
District is Los Angeles, Dealer is Shelby American Inc.
Customer is Shelby American 402F package, Decent. Date is
    1-10, Cent Date 1-2 and Sched.Date 1-16.
You are correct about the 390GT. The reason I said made from, was the
sentence on page one saying: Based on a vehicle equipped with
390-4V Engine. Can't believe I have had these papers and car for 30 years now. It's like yeaterday I bought it in the L.A.area (Huntington Beach).
I have the Marty report and the 1-16 date above matches the date the
car was serialized. It also states,
    Order Type: Retail
    DSO Item#: 5811
Dealer: 71B023 Stockton Quincy Ford Inc. 1522 Westwood Blvd. L.A., CA.
A copy I received from SAAC said that the car was going to
Pico Rivera inventory. Probably the dealer had an inventory
on Pico Rivera Blvd in L.A.

Any chance of getting a good scan or paper copy? That is not one of the ones I currently have. closest one I've got is 1-7-67 DSO grp 84-2549

    Thanks for the consideration

    Texas Swede.... PM you Thanks

Dave what he has is what Ford did to prepare the cars for Shelby and not a list of what Shelby did after they received the cars. Think that would have to be compiled.

Howdy folks! Just a few comments on this thread.Supercharged G.T. 350
cars are very rare.It was actually cheaper to buy a G.T. 500 and most people went with this choice. One low mileage car was owned by Reggie Jackson and may have been damaged by/in one of 2 fires he has suffered over the years...thankfully he is a large chevrolet collector.Somewhere i saved the article, which went into detail about how fun it was to have so much power with a small engine.and how nice it was to drive a car with low miles.Apparently with the proper camshaft this will make serious power and not cost a fortune! today we have these choices.
The engineering data that you have collected helps provide great info as to the build by ford as a knockdown unit, prior to the conversion to a Shelby. And the one detail you missed was the special springs and shocks that were specified for a Shelby..There is more.........I think I can prove what the Z cars were coded for and these sheets really help backup this discovery.

Can you share your theory on this? I have my own theory as my car is one of these Z cars.

Just a pet peeve .... not sure why people refer to these cars as "Knockdowns" Never seen anything from the period mentioning this term.... just something that popped up in the mid 80's in a Popular Hot Rodding article

Tell us more. Have a collection and since (as far as I can tell) there is no reference to the cars stamped with the "Z" (something done at Shelby not Ford) would be interested in hearing a new theory

Howdy again! A quikie response ...for snakepit first.Ford used the term knockdown for any vehicle that was not complete, yet was sent out to be completed at a later date--by someone else.It is often found in/on the right side of the radiator support in yellow grease pencil.I'm like you ..never liked the term...they also built engineless cars and called them gliders..the 65 fastbacks that became altered wheelbase cars are the best example, they have a blank space in the vin where the engine code is usually found, and most were modified by Holman/Moody with a sohc 427 for power.
The Z code is a longtime interest of mine, and together with Dave Matthews we have some statistics from the known cars with a Z in the vin stamping.Because we do not know which/or how many more cars have the Z code,it is still being investigated...but it is not linked to the type of headlamps as is often stated.Maybe we should start a Z code registry??At last count only a little over 400 cars have known Z vin codes. We all know that there must be more,so if you find one let us know please!

Dave Mathews knows of my Z stamping. Anyway, is this new theory top secret or can you share it? We won't hold you to it if it turns out not to be true.

67GT500#2100...maybe this can help. My car has a Z stamping....and when I asked a well versed friend what it meant i was told it had to do with the headlights. Then i asked an extremely well versed expert and was told it was a mark put on the cars when they were through production. i guess they were having a problem of workers taking parts they needed off of finished cars to put on unfinished cars. Once the car was done and got the Z stamp it could not be touched or someone would get fired  .
I thought that was a good explanation for the Z.

I didn't get as good an answer on why my 67 GT 500 left Shelby with its door tag still attached....answer...they forgot to take it off!

Hope this helps or at least starts some discussion.

Unfortunately (and respectfully) this is an incorrect statement/definition started as a result of a Popular Hot Rod article printed many years ago (think it was Aug 1990) that has been reprinted over and over again in other articles, most recent being earlier this year.

Believe the source was the misinterpretation of the "KD" found on the GT350 that PHR was doing at the time. As I mentioned above kind of a pet peeve with me (not the term but the interpretation of the markings) since I've spent so many years collection San Jose production information and it just does not make sense once you look at original cars IMHO.

The "KD" is really two different identification marks used at San Jose during 1965-67. "K" referred to the engine code. You can find plenty of original 428 cars with the letter "Q" in its place in those applications so if it meant what the original writer thought we would find it on all 67 Shelbys not just GT350’s
    .

You can find the same "K" and "D" on many original K code Mustangs so the "knock down" idea does not hold up. Cars such as "A" or "C" code cars did not receive engine code identification marks at San Jose to save effort but larger and smaller (6 cylinder ones) did. The location of that application moved (normally) between one of three locations depending on the worker

The "D” can be found in one of three (normally) locations depending on which worker (one of three regular employees assigned to that duty) and is found only ever type of car from A code 65's to 70 6 cylinders at San Jose.

Got hundreds of pictures of these specific details from original cars. Just hate to see people be mislead. And we know you can’t always trust what makes it into print…. Especially older stuff

    _________________________________________________________

As for the "Z" topic ... we could start a new thread to collect VIN's of both one that had and ones that didn't to at least add to the information pool. I might have a couple hundred VIN tag pictures I can look through

    Hi again,
My car #1317 has a Z as well. I have heard that an employee at SA
    explained the Z as follows:
Many 67 cars were sitting outside at SA in L.A. for many months
and started to deteriorate so crews were sent out to fix them up.
When a car was fixed they marked the serialnumber plate with the Z
to avoid going to the same car twice.
To me that explanation makes sense as my car was ready on 5/25/67,
order from dealer received on 10/13/67 and car shipped on 10/14/67.
This means almost 5 months outside prior to order from a dealer and
probably some time in Aug-Oct. timeframe the SA crew made sure that
the car was presentable as a new car.
Comments, please? Anybody else heard this or is this old Swede getting
too old so dreams and reality get mixed up.
    /Texas Swede

Starting a new thread on 67 Shelbys stamped with the "Z" so that this conversation does not get lost and even more off thread ;)

Maybe you can repost your understanding again.... BTW thanks again for the scans. Will keep an eye out for the item you need
