I just wanted to introduce myself since I was encouraged to do so after registering. I don't own a Shelby but I do have a 68 fastback GT that I bought back in '75 (still have it). The main reason I joined is because my friend has a 67 GT 350 and there seems some controversy about the VIN on his car. This got me curious. From what I've researched there should be a stamped VIN on the right shock tower inside the engine compartment. And (so I'm told) there should be one underneath the Shelby tag (that's riveted on) on the left fender apron. Is it possible that it's under the fender? Can anyone clarify for me? I hope you all don't think I'm a lazy type guy right off the bat, but I tried doing a search and not coming up with anything other than being more confused. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with this.

    Kind regards
    jim

edited to change year from 68 to 67

In 68 There is one on the top of the dash on the passenger side, you see it from outside the car looking to the loser windshield.

Actually, the VIN Tag is on the Drivers Side at the Base of the Windshield where the Dash Pad butts up to it. It is hard to make out the Digits on most cars because of the Age so you may have to find a way to clean it so you can read it.

Not true. The tag put on @ Ford is on the passenger side base of windshieild. In addition the driver's and passenger side front aprons have the VIN stamped in them. The passenger side is covered by the fender and the driver's side is covered by the Shelby VIN tag in the fender cutout. On NJ cars even with the Shelby tag removed you usually can only see several #'s of the Ford stamped VIN and several are covered by fender. If you look at the underside of apron you can often make out stamp (backwards) without removing fender.

I have never seen a VIN# Plate on the Passenger Side of the Dash on a Mustang, or any other American Vehicle for that mater. Please take a Photo of your VIN# that is on your "DASH" and post it so I can see. All of the Mustangs that I have owned (over 130 of them) have had them on the Drivers Side (Left Front Corner).

Don't forget that the door tag must also have the ford # that the Shelby VIN starts with.

    Well, that's very different then!

Both aprons will have the Ford #, if they are original to the car.
Pass side Ford # covered by fender, loosen bolts to see it, approx middle.
Shelby VIN will be visable with fender on, stamped into apron aprox middle as well, sometimes it is light, or may have filled with paint if car had a heavy compartment spray during a resto.
Drivers side Shelby VIN tag riveted over ford #
a handful of cars came with door tags, very rare.
VIN on original block, pass side front near oil pan surface.

You're joking, right? I guess none of your 130 were 68s then. Stop looking at your car though the mirror and maybe you'll get it right. Why do you have such a chip on your shoulder?

68 tags for windshield are on pass side, as also confirmed in Shelby Registry.

I typically resist challenges to "prove myself" but since you are so arrogant I will oblige,

Please don't embarass yourself further by calling this a phony. It is a Jan 68 build with complete documentation and is a SAAC Div 2 gold winner. I can supply another 129 photos that show the same thing:thumbdown

    Re: 68 GT350 VIN Location(s)

1968 is the first year for windshield/dash mounted VINs. For Mustangs, they are all on the passenger side. In 1969 the standard became the driver's side. TLEA correct again! Only someone who is not a genius would question one....:guitar: besides I still think 1968 was the only year they built Shelbys, wasn't it? I never see anything else when I go to the shows. They obviously made more of them for a reason (because they were better)

OK...... I am man enough to say I was WRONG......... It has been a while since I have owned a 68 Mustang, most have been 69 and up. Arrogant I am not, thanks for the Pic to prove me wrong. I just dont remember ever going to the Passenger side to check for the VIN.

I still find it humorous how off track some of these posts get. Not just on this forum, but others as well.

Just curious...is it possible that the number stamped on the left side (under the Shelby plate) could instead be under the fender? Has anyone ever encountered this?

I have seen on a few 1967 & 1968 Mustangs that I parted out where Ford has Stamped the VIN# on the Drivers Side Twice, one where it is seen and one under the Fender Lip where it is only seen with Fender Removed. Both VIN#'s were the same.

    Re: 68 GT350 VIN Location(s)

The Shelby VIN tag was intentionally riveted over the Ford VIN, for DMV purposes. The drivers side fender has a notch in it for the specific purpose of allowing the Ford VIN to be seen. I have seen several where they did not cover the complete Ford # <with the Shelby Tag>, but have never seen one where there was no # under it.
Has anyone reading this ever "popped" one rivet, moved the Shelby tag over and NOT seen the Ford #? And for that matter, has anyone ever seen an original Mustang <not Shelby> that did not have a VIN within the notch area, even partially?

I have seen many that were Stamped well outside the notched area, about an inch out.

    Re: 68 GT350 VIN Location(s)

That is within reason, and it was visible without having to move the fender <I assume>
I looked back at the original inquiry and his subsequent updates, and I am now wondering if there is a question of it being a "legit" Shelby.
