This subject started during another thread and rather than continue the off thread trend I'm starting this one.

When through the pictures I have of 67 Shelby VIN tags (ones stamped at Shelby mounted to the drivers side inner fender panel) and found the following results shown below. Unfortunately I have more pictures of cars than VIN tags.

From these few cars it appears that this was a thing that was not done at the beginning of production but a running change but time will tell but I'm sure there is a better list out there. *Try and stay with reporting original - not repo - tags ;)

I have a picture of 2532 when it was being restored. I can not make out a Z but it is not clear. Is it at the front of the sequence?

The "Z" was much larger than the VIN and was to the left (before) the VIN

Understand.... had a half dozen or so that were taken from too far away and though I could make out something in some of them .... could not be sure

I thought I read that the Z was stamped after an inspection of the completed car, making sure the car met the laws of the state it was going to, such as outboard lights........

I've always leaned towards it is a quality control or inspection stamp and not related to headlights.

    Hi Jeff,
My car is #1317 and not #1319 as said in your list.
    It has outboard lights.
What do you think of my response about the Z?

    Sorry,
Didn't see your response to my last reply on the old thread.
Here it is again and thanks for checking on the part for me.

    Hi again,
My car #1317 has a Z as well. I have heard that an employee at SA
    explained the Z as follows:
Many 67 cars were sitting outside at SA in L.A. for many months
and started to deteriorate so crews were sent out to fix them up.
When a car was fixed they marked the serialnumber plate with the Z
to avoid going to the same car twice.
To me that explanation makes sense as my car was ready on 5/25/67,
order from dealer received on 10/13/67 and car shipped on 10/14/67.
This means almost 5 months outside prior to order from a dealer and
probably some time in Aug-Oct. timeframe the SA crew made sure that
the car was presentable as a new car.
Comments, please? Anybody else heard this or is this old Swede getting
too old so dreams and reality get mixed up.
    /Texas Swede

#2891 with inboards and Z stamp.

I agree with TLEA...i think it was a quality control or inspection stamp.

    3040: with "Z", outboard headlights.

The "Z" was something that SAAC tracked for the 1997 registry as generic note "A" (reference page 582). Dave Mathews may be able to shed some more light after collecting information all these years. I'm not sure what the current registry has to say on the matter as I don't own one.

    Hello,

Car number 0100, the first production G.T. 500, does not have the "Z" on its Shelby serial number plate.

    Thanks,
    Eric

#3014 outboard. Z stamped....clearly after the plate was mounted. There is a corresponding dimple in the apron below the stamp. Completed 7/21/67, shipped 7/25. Wouldn't fit with the 'sitting around' part of the above scenario. The 'final approval' or 'ready to ship' ideas seem logical. Somebody out there has to know. Probably getting a laugh watching us all go after this.
