Some pictures, Date code on the CJ is 8D26 or April 26th, 1968. Engine is going to be rebuilt, had low compression. http://picasaweb.google.com/mike.herman/KRRestoration
Very nice Mike....have you looked for detailing information on the C6 ? Refresh me on the build date and serial number.....a private message is ok.
At least someone is making progress That replacement converter must have had a pretty high stall speed. Must have launched pretty well
A couple questions for you if you don't mind me asking. When you say the date on the CJ is Apr 26, do you mean the casting date on the block, or a stamped assembly date? Do you know what the build date was for the car? Does the C6 have an "R" servo, or an "H" servo? Are the engine and trans stamped with a partial VIN #? Thanks, Jerry
Take a look at the top of your Transmission. it should have a partial VIN on the top as well as a Cast Iron Tail shaft. I hope it gets back together quicker than your other Vert! Mine is still apart with no starting time in the near future due to other obligations!!
The block has a "cast" date near the oil filter adapter on that reads 4 26. C6 appears to have an "H" Servo (R Servos are very rare). No Ford VIN numbers on trans or the block. Build Date was 6/27/68. Mike
Thanks for looking. In my experience it is not unusual for the block or heads on a 68-1/2 to not have the stamped VIN. It seems more unusual for the trans not to be VIN stamped. Are you sure you're looking in the right place. There's a rectangular pad on the top of the case and it'll likely be hand stamped and may be very light. I was most interested in the servo, since the "H" servo is somewhat controversial in a CJ car, though I've seen it rather often in early KRs (yours is actually later than some I've seen with "R" servos). The "H" servo is likely a stop-gap measure carried over from the early '68 GT500s and Cougar GTEs. Starting sometime before the end of '68 production all CJs had the "R" servo. Two more related questions: Is the tailshaft housing aluminum or cast iron (all I've seen are cast iron)? Is there a "tag" on one of the servo bolts (should be stamped PGB-AF)?
I also have the engine out of my KR convertible at present for a rebuild and I was unable to find any VIN numbers on the block or heads. I feel that everything is original to the car as all casting dates are spot on for the build date of the car. Have not looked at the trans. to date but will check when out of car. Regards Paul
When i pulled the 428 PI out of my 68 GT500 i found the partial VIN stamped on the back of driver side head. The VIN matched that of the VIN stamped on the top of the C6 tranny. And my casting dates were right on with the build of the car. Hope this helps when you are looking...i have a question...would this process of stamping VIN's differ in 68 from a GT500 to a KR?
Although the stamp was supposed to be on the block, it is not unusual to find it on the head. There's no difference 500 vs 500KR that I've ever heard of...the stamping was spotty at best throughout '68. I suspect it is as simple as if the guy on the line remembered, it got stamped, and if he didn't, oh well. You can kind of tell by the quality of the stamping that the kinks hadn't all been worked out on identifying major car components with VINs.
TLEA informed that many cars were stamped on the intake or the head. As i remember he told me that it was very rare on the block. It is always nice to find that VIN stamp on parts...lets me sleep better at night.
Hi Mike, Any updates on your motor? Do you know if you'll have it back in time to spend the Holidays in the garage? Please post pics. I'd love to see how it turns out. Josh
The engine was just shipped from the rebuilding shop back to the car in Chicago last. He is aiming for the holidays, he is going to take some pictures along the way and send them to me. It should be in San Diego in a month. Mike did the restoration on my 67 and on the engine of my KR. I did not do the engine and under-body because I plan to drive this car. I will do that down the line. Mike
