Stirling Moss's GT350

    A friend told me the Stirling Moss ’66 GT350 auctioned off at the Keels & Wheels event a few months ago went for $650K.

    Can anyone confirm that price?

    Would that be a record for a ’66 GT350?

    I believe the car is a street model that was converted to race specs and owned & driven by Moss at one time. I’m sure that was a HUGE factor in the value.

    According to what I read the selling price was $510K and I am not sure what premiums were added. It was definitely high dollars for what was reported to be a 3+ car, so you can probably chalk it up to Sir Stirling Moss' ownership

    I believe Stirling's car was a carryover Shelby. To be vintage legal in the UK
    and Europe; there is a FIA rule the car must have a '65 VIN number. Since
    the carryover cars do have a '65 Ford VIN; they are recognized by the FIA.
    Stirling's car was prepared by Racing Restorations in Milford, Conn. a number
    of years ago.

    Interesting factoid on the FIA requirement on the '65 Vin, I had not heard that before. The article I read said the car was 6s089, but I also read a later article that said it was an early '65 so I am not sure. The original article I read also said the car was converted to 65 "R" specs by the president of Aston Martin in the '80s and the sold to Moss later. It did not give any details on any racing history however so I am not sure if it was ever really driven in anger.

    I remember reading that the car had quite a bit of later vintage race history.
    Car was a 66.

    Sterling's car was prepared for vintage racing as per FIA specs in 1995/6
    by Chris Leibenberg, owner of Racing Restorations. Mr. Leibenberg, during
    this time, worked for a member of the family which owns the Aston Martin distributorship for North America; maintaining his rather large inventory of European exotics as well as a number of Cobras, Shelbys and Trans Am cars. My Shelby was in Racing Restorations shop during this period.

    I heard that the Stirling Moss car was 6S010.

    Regarding racing under the appendix K, historic 65 class it supposedly are for cars made in 65 or older.

    As the 1966 carryovercars have a 65 VIN, they do fit this class.


    I real life I´m pretty sure there are 66 cars racing here, but as they were 65 cars.

    Interesting enough, the FIA homologation (1329 / 1330)for the 65 Mustang sedan specificly states that the VIN must have a "K" engine code, where all other Mustang homologations just states the first letters in the VIN regarding build year.
    Still many, probably most, of the Mustang sedans racing do not have this "K" VIN and they still race.

    When I was looking for a Shelby I ended up choosing GT350 6S006 because of the future possibilities to compete in the 65 historic class because of the 65 VIN.

    I must have misunderstood something then.

    Is there a similar story regarding car number 6s010?

    SFM 6S 010 was drag raced, then Curt Vogt bought it, so it's possible that there is some other history as well.
