Hi, it's me again, As most of you 65 owners know, the cars came from the factory with one of three types of hoods: -Fiber glass with a wire mesh opening -Fiber glass with a big opening for scoop -Fiber glass laid on a metal structure According to the registry the wire mesh type was common from the beginning of production to about half. Cars around my car # 275 show to have all types above. Early cars as shown in the 65 magazines have wire mesh with white under hood color and no prop rods. Does anybody know which type came from Shelby with white paint under the hoods and which ones where black? Any cut off date or serial number? Which types of hoods had prop rods and which used the springs? I painted my wire mesh hood type white and don't know if that's correct. Maybe it should be black. It has a prop rod with the original bolt to hold it down. Thanks for your input, Texas Swede
All of the historical photos I have seen with the port hole hoods and wire mesh are body color as well as personal observation . I have seen the metal understructure hood -body color more times then blacked out and the all fiberglass hood blacked out more times then body color . I have a theory that the underside was blacked out if the paint job underneath didn't turn out well.
Thanks Bob, So you suggest I leave my hood white. What about the prop rods? Did all all fiber glass hoods, wire mesh and port hole get the prop rods and the metal understructure get springs? Thanks, Texas Swede
Bo, on the prop rods at least some of the port hole hoods also used springs I believe all the metal understructure hoods used springs . The all fiberglass hoods used prop rods and some used springs . I would leave your under hood white.
Thanks Bob, See that I said port hole when I meant the full fiber glass type with the large opening. Sorry, Will leave my hood white. Texas Swede
I have a photo directory I have maintained for my personal use dating back to 1972 when I started my interest in Mustangs. I remember reading an article in one of the Marques pertaining to the hood issue you are asking about. Quite a few cars were sold originally with the light weight springs knowing the original springs were too strong and would warp or break the fiberglass. Not until a few complaints were made about the lightweight springs causing damage did the prop rods show up to eleminate the problems. The rods were dealer installed on those early cars. Some pivoting from the left while others were right pivot. Thus bringing up the issue of replacement hoods damaged due to this miscalculation. I am sure those original hoods were discarded and other later versions were used and being dealer serviced the original colors were not returned to exact factory specs. I believe from all the photos taken by me of those hoods with wire mesh were definately body color and those showing up later black or gray were those serviced from either warpage or owners crashing them and insurance claims replacing them. I thought this needed to be said so we could put this in our think tanks when we get around to restoring all those genuine 65's. Great question to bring to the forum!
My 5S266 was a 25,000 mile, original paint survivor. All Fiberglass, wire mesh hole, painted white, prop rod , no springs. Hope this helps.
Hi Paul, Thanks for the info. 5S266 was a real beauty when you owned it. I think I saw that car in Detroit at SAAC-? about 17 years ago. Had just bought 5S275 in 1988 and was full of envy. Especially those original Cobra Vent Caps. Still look at 266 in the book by Tom Corcoran but the underside of the hood isn't visable unfortunately. Wonder where it is now? By the way, do you still have some pictures showing the underside of the hood. I am interested to know if there were any metal bezels around the bottom holes in the hood. Thanks, Texas Swede
