Hi, can someone tell me what the correct fuel pump would be for a '67GT500?Is it a Carter with a canister and what is the number on the flange.Thanks in advance for your help....Greg.
Jeff, Does this also apply to GT 500s equipped with factory A/C and the factory oil cooler? It appears there would be a clearance issue between the fuel filter cannister and the oil cooler lines. Please let us know. Thanks, Eric
Ford part #C0AZ-D Carter #4442 or 4539 '67 428 PI Before 2/1/67 Ford part #C7AZ-A Carter #4441 w/X mk. '67 428 PI After 2/1/67 Carter no. will be stamped on pump mounting flange. I do not think these pumps had the filter canister. If my memory serves me right the fuel filter canister was mounted in front of the left valve cover.
All of the 1967 Shelby GT500 used the carter pump button top with the canister (marked Autolite not Fomoco). The assembyline and early service pumps had CAR bura TER in the casting. The 67 GT500 had to have the canister pump because the duel four holleys did not have a filter on the carbs . They only had a small pumice screen inside the bowl inlet.The 427 big car line used the fuel canister plumbed into the fuel line conected to a brkt mounted to the driver side head. Also those big cars and 427 Cobras used a AC marked pump and not the carter pump from the factory. There are a few early Mag photos of cars that had the 427 style canister but there was so many other things different it was obvious it was not a production car. Also the 67 and 68 GT500 /KR with factory Air used a special short oil filter to compensate for the extra length the S7MS oil cooler donut used under the standard oil filter adapter creates.
Bob, On a factory A/C car, how were the oil cooler lines positioned/routed in order to clear the cannister style fuel filter on the bottom of the fuel pump? Do you have any pictures you could post that show this? Please let us know. Mike Herman, does your car have the correct fuel pump with cannister type filter on the bottom and the correct oil cooler and lines arrangement? If so, could you post a picture or two? Thanks, Eric
I will take some pictures of the oil cooler lines and the special oil filter that are on a car in my collection. It will probably be Monday before I can get them on.
Eric, I have the earlier version with the pump button and canister. I do have the original oil cooler that factory AC cars had. I am not home until tomorrow but I will take some pictures and post them as well. I imagine Bob can give you great guidance on the line position etc.....
Did you get this from the Illustrated/Mater Parts Catalog. In general this list replacement parts (parts available at the time of printing that would work) rather than the original parts
Unfortunately my brother has my FMC Master Parts cats, he is about 65 miles away unfortunately. I found the pump numbers in a Ford Muscle Parts indentifier book which I have found to be fairly accurate but not always. I did look through a bunch of '67 GT500 pics and found that the canister type pump is correct as previously stated by Mr. Gaines. Sorry about any misinformation. I will continue to research my archives for better information. :blush:
Re: '67 GT500 fuel pump oil cooler line clearence Eric and all, here is a picture taken from below looking up at fuelpump canister. Notice the oil cooler lines have plenty of clearance from the fuel canister. Next pictures show a comparision between the special 67/68 Shelby GT500 with a/c oil filter vs stock filter. The standard one will work but hangs done much lower. The short thicker filter is the concours correct size. You can see that with the S7MS oil cooler donut added to the stock oil filter adapter the shorter filter compensates for the added length. Since it is thicker it holds the same volume as the stock filter. On a concours car I would paint it engine color to represent how it would look from the assemblyline. If you look in the master parts book it will give you the filter number .
Bob, Thanks for posting the pictures. So, if I was looking down at the driver's side of the engine block at the fuel pump and the oil filter adapter and oil cooler lines; the oil cooler donut is positioned so the lines are angled out slightly towards the driver's side of the car in order for them to clear the fuel filter cannister. Yes to Eric's question. Mike, I assume you mean oil filter instead of fuel filter canister. The short fat one is the one that is technically correct for a 67 or 68 GT500/KR air car for the reasons I explained before.
