Hello everyone. My family came across a 1967 gt500 about 20 years ago. The car was donated to church for a tax write off and was going to be scrapped because it looked like a piece of junk to the laymans eye. We were the owners of the scrap yard and quickly my father realized that it was no ordinary mustang. He put it in a building and forgot about it. When muscle cars started going through the roof and I was older I found out what it was. I found out that it was bought in Long Island and never left Brooklyn. It was only regestered once and sat since like 1973. I am sure the car has only 18,000 miles because of that and the wear and tear on the clutch pedel, steering wheel and shifter. The outside of the car is pretty mangled, It is in primer and all dented. But a close look at the car and one realizes what kind of gem it is. The car is complete save the carbs and air cleaner assembly. (stolen by our own workers years ago). Through the vin#, I found out that it was the puke green and white stripes.
Anyway, after being offered tons of money for the car as is by a collector friend of my fathers, he wants to restore it. He wants it done by the top athority on these cars (whomever that may be) I must find out. He has heard that it may cost over $100k to do so.
Can anyone put me in the right direction??? Some names and steps that I must go through to verify 100% that the car is what I know it is? Any help whould be great. I can get pics and whatever if anyone is interested in following up on the restoration.
I also am interested in what the car that is completely restored by the best and documented is worth?... If it is worth doing like that, like a museum piece and not a driver. I know some people restore them very nicely but they are not worth as much.

If you could give us the VIN #, that would be a good place to start.

If you are going to do the full blown restoration, hopefully, your intention is not to make money....because with the current prices that may not be too realistic.

It wont be for sale. Also I figure the whole thing will take a very long time so who knows were the market will be. I just have to do as much homework as I can and field the options. I think the car is fine sitting where it is, at least it can't get any more damaged. LOL Kidding aside, I will do the job right because I believe the car is a piece of rare art and it deserves the right teatment.
I will get all the info tomarrow aside from a 4 speed, puke green and white stripes and inboard headlights.

Lime Gold green was the most popular color for Shelbys. And my favorite color...i think it looks awesome with a quality paint job. And no 67 (expect for Charlie's Super Snake) came from the factory with white stripes.

I love that color!!. Im putting #3000 back to its original Lime Gold.

As far as authenticating the car first get the vin and title. See if the Shelby number is stamped on the passengers side inner fender apron above the passenger side right shock tower. If there is a 13 digit stamp there, your off to a good start. Next email SAAC: 67registrar@saac.com . He can give you some info on the car.

Ok I got the Vin... I lookled the car up so long ago I made a mistake on the color... It is lime green and gold, not white. The vin is 67400f7a01583. I have what looks like the registration from 1969. the last time it was registered... It is falling apart. I also thought we had at least a couple of original wheels. Maybe they were stolen? So I have no idea which ones it came with. Oh the car only has 13000 miles on it. There is no mistaking it. The interior has no wear and tear.

Is the original hood fiberglass??? on a 67 gt500. Also, is the car just lime green with no stripes or does it have stripes?? The only gt500 pics I can find are lime green with white stripes. John76 says that there was only one gt500 that was lime green and white strips. I'm confused.

They did come with glass hoods. Early ones had a steel framed glass hood. 67's did not come with the lemans stripes but many have had them painted on after or added when they were repainted.

I'd love to see some pics if you could post a few.

I'll take some tomarrow. The car looks like a heap from the outside. Someone tried paintimg it orange and black, but you will see what I mean by looking at the interior. It's a special car.

Ok...lets see if i can fix this. The color is lime gold green not lime green with gold stripes. No 67 shelby of any color came with white racing stripes from the factory...they were all a dealer or owner added option. Charlie's 67 GT500 with factory 427 SO, called the Super Snake, came with three stipes from the factory. It was a white car with blue stripes. All the cars came with fiberglass hoods and truck lids.

Well according to your vin it sounds like Shelby #1583. I would call Dave Mathews at SAAC and see what he knows from the registry about the car.

Registry says your car was originally shipped to Wolf Motor in NYC. Factory production order form is marked " Mahwah Inventory".? Purchased 5/24/67 by original owner L & B Auto Leasing in NYC. Present owner unknown.
Not any more. Please contact SAAC if haven't already. Good luck with the resto. Sounds like a great project and I am sure their are many envious Shelby fans.

I never knew that gt500's didn't come with racing stripes from the factory.
I'll post some pics after I take them today. I didn't bring my camera to work yesterday and my phone camera sucks.

I am located in Queens, and also own a 67 500. If you'd like, I can come out to see the car to give you a fair assessment of what it's worth, and what it will cost to restore.
