Look at the picture of the air cleaner cover. Notice it does not say COBRA on it> I don't understand. Even if it is aftermarket, where did it come from??

That should be a great project.
It looks to be quite complete and fairly solid. I'm jealous.
Be sure to keep us updated on its progress.

Some of the very earliest GT500's used this type of aircleaner before the Cobra marked one was ready. This type lid was used on the early big car line for duel four applications. A emblem of a Thunder Bird was mounted in the front in the space just in front of were the uneven fins are .It appears your VIN tag says 1583 not 1383. The lid must have been switched at some time in the cars life much like the headers ,exhaust etc.

Bob is correct. Remember, cars weren't always built in strict numerical order. So, it is possible you have an early built car. I recommend you get the Marti paperwork to go with the car. Take a look at this old road test and tell me what you see? I think this lid probably came without the T-bird emblem as well.

Please remember rule #1 : NEVER, EVER THROW ANYTHING AWAY (even if you think its not right)

I think that qualifies as a barn find :cigar:

    Very interesting project.

I´m amazed every time a project like this one surfaces. One should think that after these past years with extreme prices every Shelby ever built would have been found and restored.

WOW..... Very cool. It is amazing that considering how rough it is the Steering Wheel still looks great. Great Car.

I hope that never happens. Finding them tucked away in a barn somewhere is the most exciting part of the process in my opinion.

I also think this is definetely a barn find.....the only problem is the present owner owns the barn, and he placed it there about 20 years ago..(lol)

    Great pictures alex. thank you

Great find. Thanks for posting photos. From the interior shots it looks like it's been underwater at one time. Any history of flood damage?

In the first picture you posted of the front of the car it appears the hood is not right it looks like a reproduction shorty mustang hood ????? What other cars might your dad have hidden away ???????

The hood is just sitting there, that's why it looks off. I'll try to find out about the air cleaner but like bob says, it is probably not stock. The car was never under water, just poorly stored. This week, I ill spend getting more info on the history through Matri/saac and you guys.
The old man used to have a lot of cars but he got rid of most of them. He just gave my littel brother a nice 67 t-bird convertable. I just finished restoring a 73 Z28 that I got like 15 years ago and my other brother scored a 71' SS454 chevelle.
