Does anyone know of any good restoration books available? I know there are a pile of mustang resto books around but but I'm not really looking for the basic "how to" book. I'm looking for something with correct paint colors for different components, correct fasteners, etc. thanks
Over all I don't think there is anything much more comprehsive on all the items you mentioned then the mustang assemblyline manuals. There is Mustang and Ford small block by Bob Mannel published by RPM Press that is extremley detailed on every aspect of 1962 to 1969 small blocks engines . Then for the 65 and 66 the 289 high performance Mustang by Tony Gregory is very helpful. As with any reference book or documentation you still have to know when the info applies to a Shelby and when it applies to a regular mustang . Not all markings are used on all years cars etc. Hey Snakebite are you working on your book yet?
I have all the 67 assembly manuals along with the shelby assembly manual. I guess I'll make due with those. thanks
You must get the AMK book that complements the assembly manuals. The AMK book will show a picture of the correct fastener in place of the number in the assembly manual as well as tell the correct finish. In the assembly manuals the fasteners are represented as a 7 to 9 digit number and without the AMK book you can't make heads or tails out of them. Everytime I look through those manuals no matter what the year ,I find out something new.
IMHO there are no good books for rebuilding the cars and we are just learning ( after all these years) so much more every month. The assembly manuals and judging guidelines are a start but nothing currently beats a good forum, with publically asked questions (so answers get live peer review) as you go through a car. Even good references like Max's hardware manuals will show you the specs for the hardware but not identify exactly all the details used during the time and at the plant your car was assembled at. And all this for a regular restoration.... national winners...... that is another thing!!
